Ten tailors
here once
BY JOANNE
BUCHANAN
Tailoring seems to be a
lost . art . these: days but
Arnold,McConnell, a retired
Goderich businessman,
remembers whenre were
no less than 10 ' tailors
working out of shops here.
"I: was looking through the
Signal -Star recently and
some clothing adscaughtmy
eye. I turnedto-mywife and
told. her. I could reme
when 1 could -buy a tailored
_ ?Waite to -measure surf " bere
with two pairs of pants' for
$29.50," Mr..McConnell
remarks
He sat down and.
made =list of`all the°tailors
and tailoring'businesseshe
Could : rememdi,er' operating
here ;in the late 1930s and
early
Charlie Black and Johnny
Nivins came to mind first.
They had a tiny tailoring
slap- at the -.corner of East
Street The Square. .
• "It was just a littlehole-in-
the=wall- It used' to be fun to
_watch Johnny_perched upon
his stool in the corner with
needle:;and..thread, -''...recalls'
Mr McConnell who explains '
that in.thosedays, only small
sewing machines existed so
almost;, all sewing was done
by hand-evenbutton holes! '
Charlie and' Johnny, ;later
moved their business to the
location of the former
Sproule. Shoes:storek
The McLean Brothers;
Allen and Wilhamn,' had a
first class•tailor shop on the
Royal Bank 'block of The
Square. E. J. Pridham had a '
men's clothing , store: where
David E. White Clothiers is
located today.
Then there was Frank
Martin .who made suits from
a large stock.,of material he
kept on hand. His store was
first located on. West Street
but later moved to a brand
new modern shop on The
Square where Dr. G.B.
Clancy's office is now
Iocated.
W.C. Snazel then moved
into Martin's former shop on
West Street and not only
tailored men's suits but sold
other men's apparel as well.
M. Robins and his brother
had the Tip Top agency
located on The Square where
the Goderich Discount Store
is now.
But' probably the best
know tailor of all in Goderich
at this time, says Mr.
McConnell, was Joe Fritzley.
"He worked for all the
other tailors at one time and
also had his own little shop at
his home. He V/as really
something, walking down the
street in his bowler hat and
tailor-made coat. He was
always • dressed im-
maculately."
How did all of these tailors
make a living when the
population of Goderich was
only about 4,000?
Mr. McConnell thinks it
might have had something to
do with the extremely low
prices and .the, number of
sailors who regularly visited
Goderich when their ships
were docked here.
-All of the Cores' Were -
really modern and up -ted, -.-
date.
- •date. None of them were
junky. And it only took about
10 days for your suit to be
made after you were
measured," he says.
Today, Gerrards and
David E. White Clothiers are
the only•two men's clothing
stores on The Square, and
tailoring is a lost art.
Len Lumsden of David E.
White Clothiers says' they
still getstsome requests for
custom made suits and there
are a few tailors in Montreal
and London who can make
them --but at 'double the price
you'd pay for a suit off the
rack!
