Hard work and a happy
marriage are the secrets to a
long life, according to
Charlie Young of Maitland
Manor who celebrated 'his
100th birthday last week_
Mr. Young was born in
Colborne Township on July
25, 1882. As a young man, he
worked at odd jobs in
Chicago and Detroit before
returning to Colborne
Township to marry in 1904.
He and his wife Freda then
moved to Goderich where he
worked on maintenance at
the Purity Flour Mill for 40
years, retiring in 1958. Even
though he was 76 at the time
of his retirement, he con-
tinued to work for three
more, years after that as a
carpenter.
Mr. Young's wife died in
1977 after 73 years of
marriage and he continued
to live on his own for a few
years until going to Maple
Grove on Nelson Street and
then Maitland Manor last
August. Except for having to
use a wheelchair and being
hard of hearing, he enjoys
good health and his mind is
sharp.
On Friday evening he
enjoyed a birthday party
with Manor residents and on
Sunday, he enjoyed another
party with a few relatives
and close friends. He
received congratulations
from Prime Mihister
Trudeau, Joe Clark, Premier
Davis and Governor-General
Schreyer.
