The first record of a steel
container being used as a
musical instrument dates
back .to 1945. A group of
musicians were beating'
their bamboo drums when
one Suddenly burst. To fill
the resulting gap in• the
rhythm) the drummerless
drumrner struck the empty
gas tank of an abandoned
car. The sound produced was
very • gratifying and far
superior to the sound • from

these steel, drums were
available in stock pile quan-
tities. Trinidad was used for
a refueling port by the allies
before -proceeding' to the
Azores, North Africa and the
Mediterranean. When the
war ended, the footprints left.

'were in the form of -abandon-
ed oil drums.
• It seemed a stroke of fate
that these drums were so
readily available to fill the
needs of these musicians.

daughters, Jean of Waterloo,
Mary and Margaret of
T rant°, Kay and Agnes 'of
Fbnilton and Isobel of Blind
River.
The afternoon was spent
, with races and, games. The
winners.of the water balloon
throwing contest were Anne
and Larry Gibson. The egg
throwing contest winners
were Debbie Maurice and
Kim Gutcher in the adult
class and Allan Gutcher and
Paul Atthill ' in the in-
termediate. The ladies' shoe
kick was won by Debbie •
Maurice and the men's by
Barry Hutchinson.
To conclude the afternoon
activities, a delicious family
dinner was enjoyed by all.
The convenor § of this
year's event were Doug and
Julie*Atthill of Kitchener.
The youngest member pre-
sent was ten -month-old Mat-
thew Gibson, son of Anne
and Larry Gibson of
Hamilton.
