Proposal rejected • The federal governmeits proposed agri-food strategy: Challenge for Growth has •'been. rejected by the Chris- tian Farmers Federation of Ontario. The CFFO does not share the optimism of the federal • government's strategy ac- cording to a major policy by the • 'Federation's Provincial • Board at itsJunemeeting in • Wilton, Ontario. . • • "The primary failing of • the agri-food strategy paper •is its forecast of a future that • is neither desirable nor .at- • tainable," the Statement says. •' The federal strategy forecasts that .Canada can - increase agri-food produc- tion by two-thirds and -double the current dollar value by the tunt olthe century. The CFFO disagrees. The farm group forecasts that increases will be very expensive and that even pre- sent production levels may be hard to maintain. The statement also disagrees with the govern- ments optimistic view of • growing export markets for food. ' "There are only a few peo ple in the world that can af- • . ford our cost of production" the CFFO:statement says. "The gap between our stan- • dard of living and mild) of the rest of the world has in- • creased dramatically. ' Our own consumers are well able., to pay for our production costs; but few other con- sumers among the world's • masses can afford our costs." The Federation „ recom- mends an alternative strategy based on import replacement; resource stewardship; support for family farmers; research on a less intensive agriculture; more jobs in agriculture. • The Federation says that the present development of agriculture is mining our natural and human resources. It rails for a more responsible agri-food strategy that will promote the role of people and stewardship of resources. •Copies of the statement are available by writing: Christian Farmers Federa- tion of Ontario, Box 698, Har- riston, Ontario, NOG_ 1Z or • calling5l9.1338-2921.
