The Goderich Signal-Star, 1982-07-07, Page 15Star scores upset win BY ROB MCDONALD STARIBEDFORDO Goderich Signal -Star put the finishing touch to a fine week by upsetting second' place Hotel Bedford 1-0 as Jim Martin threw a one -hitter. Martin held the Dukes hitters until the fifth when Ron Hunking tripled. Signal -Star scored the games only run when Brian Rumig was hitby a pitch, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on an error. Loser Rob Plunkett allowed just four hits in taking the loss. Earlier . in the week, Kevin Meriam belted out a single, double and- a triple while scoring once and driving in two runs as Signal -Star dumped French 5-1. Steve Frayne led off the first with a single -and sohn Waer walked:. Brian. MacLean ingled home Frayne and Meriam tripled home two more. They added two more in the fifth when Brian Rumig followed Meriam's single with a triple and scored on a groundout. Glen Linner had two triples for Freh. Fred Fellow pitched a fine five hitter', but injured his finger and may be out for the year. BEDFORD 2 HAYTER'S 1 Hotel Bedford continued to -play well as they yl vii twice. Or, Monday, Bill Black doubled home Terry Austin in the sixth inning to score the eventual winning run as Hotel Bedford beat Hayter's 2-1. Bedford took the lead in the fourth when Dave MacDonald singled and scored two outs later on Gary Peters single: Hayter's closed tha gap to one m the seventh but left the tying run on base. John Crawford pitched four strong innings to gain the win with strong relief by Rob Plunkett. Doug Fisher lost his second one run game in a ----row,--MacDonald and Jim Crawford led Bedford with two. hits while Dave McDonald led Hayter's with two. On Wednesday, Plunkett flirted with his second no-hitter of the Year but gave up • two singles in the sixth as Bedford beat Denomme's 2-0. The game looked lik,8, a good match, pitting hard hitting Denomme batters against the hard thowing Plunkett,. but it porved to be no match at all. Plunkett walked one andstruck out seven Hifi a fine -performance -he -Io on John Kay's clean single up the middle. Plunkett and Terry Austin scored Bedford runs on errors. Austin and Del Mit- • chelmore split Bedford's four hits. Paul Corriveau took .the loss givingup just two hits in four innings. ADVERTISING 4 KIRKEY'S 1 Lakeport Advertising exploded for four runs in the top of the seventh as they beat Kirkey's 4-1. Kirkey's had take a 1-0 lead in the' -third_ _.period when Mike Wildger singled, moved to third -on rick Sowerby's single and scored on the front end of a double steal. They had runners on second and third with none .out in the fifth but Simon Langlois' struck out the next two batters. - Wayne Doak led off Lakeport in the seventh with a -triple and scored when Al Sygrove's fly was dropped. Sygrove went • to third on the"play and scored on Arnie • Pacher's pinch, single. Dave Mclvor then tripled in Parker and scored himself one out later. Doak and Mclvor led Lakeport with two hits. C.C. 6 KIRKEY'S 5 Canada Company scored six runs in the second inning and barelrhung on to defeat rkey's 6-5. With one out, Mike Frayne, $hll Peters, Rob Standen aid Bill Tigert hit consecutive singles. Dean Doherty drove in Peters on a close playat home and three runs scored when Tom O'Brien's grounder was thrown away. Mike Donnelly then singled7lome O'Brien i .irkey',s replied with three in the third, one on Rick sowerby's home run and added single runs in the fourth and- fifth. Mike Frayne led C.C. with two hits while Paul Kelly and Sowerby led Kirkey's with two. Dean-Dohert-y, won his third game irl four tries as his teammates finally scored some runs, equalling the output Of their pre'ious six games. HAYTER'S6LAKEPORT3, Jim Ginn knocked -two runs and scored three himself as Hayter's stopped Lakeport , Advertising 6-3. Ginn scored Hayter's first two runs, coming in on singles by Dave Scholl and Dennis Williamson. Lakeport scored two in the third on RBI singles by Greg Hansen and Simon Langlois. Hayter's scored four in the fourth to put the game away. Phil Petrie singled hocpe Bob Reill who doubled and went to second on Myles Murdock's single. Ginn then tripled and Jon Ginn singled him in. Lakeport, scored one in the seventh. Ginn and Murdock had two hits for Hayter's while Langlois and Greg Hansen' had two for Lakeport. KIRKEY'S 8 STEEL 3 Kirkey's scored six runs in the sixth to erase a 3-2 Lakeport Steel lead as they snapped a three game losing streak 8-3. Lakeport led 3-2 with Ron Miller scoring twice and Bruce Bowman driving in two, but their defence caved as they made four errors in the sixth. Members of the Bears slowpitch team boosted the fund to be used for the purchase of a new sound system for the Goderich Memorial Community Centre with the donation of a $200 cheque Thursday.
