torch from Ottawa to Owen Sound where
the seniors will continue the run to
Knoxville,
While they were in Goderich they were
greeted by Mayor Harry Worsell who
presented them with flags and badges'.
Similar presentations will take place along
the route as well as other entertainment

Bert & Ernie Club
Summer fun for the tots
The Goderich Recreation Department
has a full slate of summer events for the
younger residents of Goderich. Possibly
the most exciting of these events for
children from ages 3 to 6 years is the Bert
and Ernie Clubbeing held at the Goderich
Mini Community Centre.
The club is in its third year of operation
and offers a large variety of educational
and enjoyable activities to help the
children develop learning skills in a fun
filled atmosphere.
Accordirig to Bob Marshall, program co-
ordinator for the Goderich Recreation
Department, the program is specifically
designed for pre-schoolers.
"it is not a terribly rigid program
schedule that the supervisor has set up for
the Bert and,Ernie club," he said.
Marshall explained that the program is
set up on a weekly basis at a cost of $15 per
child. There are approximately 20
children in each program. It is being
funded through a grant from the Ministry
of Tourism and Recreation.
Karen Willis, program supervisor, said
that the program is similar to a nursery
school with different aspects of play
development. There is a variety of play
activities- from dramatic play to spagetti
play to painting.
Willis, a recent graduate of the Early
Childhood Education (1 CE,) course at
Conestoga College, is pleasbd with the
program. She explained that the children
are given time to play in the centre and on
the grounds. They have also attemptedio
take at least one field trip each week. This
..week she is hoping to take the children on
an excursion to a local farm.
"The children become pretty in-
dependent after only a couple of days in
the program," she explained.
The. reaction of the children seems to
support the success of the program. The
comments rhnged from nice to fantastic.
Helping Willis manage the tots is Lisa
Ryan and Barb Conlon. The program is a
worthy experience for any child. .
For the children who are too old to at-
tend the Bert and Ernie: club, the Goderich
Pool is offering swimming lessons for the
inexperienced and experienced swimmer.
Pool supervisor, Ron Wheeler andehis
staff will be holding three week sessions to\
teach children basic swimming skills and
water safety.
The Goderich Recreation Depa'ment
has a number of other act4vities planned
for the summer. They Will be listed in the
Signal -Star each week. For more–in-
formation contact the recreation office at
