The Goderich Signal-Star, 1982-07-07, Page 5Livery Theatre to host premier calypso band from Trinidad July 17 With a- commitment to make the Livery Theatre a diversified cultural and • entertainment centre, the Goderich Arts Foundation is living up to that claim with a dance Satuida.y, July 17 that features one of the premier calypso bands. - • • The South Stars Steel Orchestra, perhaps the most famous and highly respected steel band in Trinidad, will be featured at an outdoor dance at The 'Livery from 9 p.m. to midnight. The non- profit event is part of „a cultureal-- eNchange program,. funded in part by the ua and sponsored by the Goderich Arts Foundation. The discipline and ver- satility of the South'' Stars Steel Orchestra is highlighted by the varied selection.ef.arrangements of pop, Caribbean and -classical wbrks by. Bach, Beetbiovan, Rossini and Gershwin. „ The band was formed in 1977 by Stephen Achaiba, now .leader, conductor and musical director of the South Stars. Achaiba is a veteran steelband musician who has won a host' of awards for his innovative approach. He has taken steel band music to • iladla . parip of we United States, Canada and 'Bar- aaos. Since its inception in 1977, the 22 -member band has won the . `South Panorama Championship twice and has qualified for all national finals; taking third placein 1981. The dance -is one in a series of cultural events -sponsored by the non-profit Goderieh Arts Foundation. Prior to the dance, the band will be guests of the town at dinner'.. In the event of. rain, the dance will be held in the Goderich Cotmunirty Centre. Admission is $2,50. The Goderich Arts Foundation will be hosting a dance at the Livery Saturday, July 17. featuringthe incredible music of the South Stars Steel Orchestra of Trinidad. Although the oc- casion had been previously arranged through the .prei- dent, Frances Worsell and Jean ,Peart .with the vice- president of the Waterford and District Horticultural Society, the passengers on board the bus were pleasant- ly surprised. Since weather conditions were uncertain at the time, it was through the generosity of Keith Homan, owner of the grounds at Meneset Park that we were able to enjoy a bountiful noon luncheon in " the shelter of the park. recreation center and hosted by the Garden Club., Following our meal, Mrs. Worsell boarded our bus and L TTf dayCity 8 On the weekend of June 25 to 27 during the recent directed our driver to many places of interest. It could be said here that Mrs. Worsell would be a very capable tour guide on any occasion. She, had so much informative data pertaining to the various places of interest in - eluding industries, parks, museums, historical homes, etc. that .made the tour most interesting. Then as we con- cluded our tour she. - presented all 44 passengers with a packet of tourist infor- mation and souvenirs pro-' vided by Domtar and other places of interest. On Friday evening a reception for our American visitors was .held in the Vimy Court lounge. On. .Saturday"evening--our American guests were part of a large crowd who attend- ed an evening of special. entertainment in the Jubilee room featuring the Billy Meek 'show. Prior to the °• show- all of .our American guests including the Mayo? ' of Bay City and the State Commander and the Post -Commander of the American Legion were pose of the Legion is. remem- suitably recognized. - Oh Sunday many of our American visitors were pre- sent at a Friendship breakfast prepared by the Ladies Auxiliary of Branch.. 109 In the afternoon a joint Branch 109 Post 18 color and firing party participated in a very'impressive flag raising and tree planting ceremony in Court House park. A full Branch color party took part in the parade. A levee follow= ing the parade was well at- tended, by both our American guests and members of the .Branch and community. --During the well attended Canada Day ceremony in ' Court House park the sup- -port of the Branch during this annual Bay City visita- tion was publicly recognized Legion Branch 109 ap- preciates this recognition and is ,pleased and proud to play a in our annual Canada Day.celebrations.
