The Ontario Ministry of Health is allowing $187,000 to operate the service this year but the administration is estimating that it will cost at least $196,000. Last year there was a deficit of ap- proximately $5,000. "I can't see where we can make any cuts to save Money," hospital ad- ministrator Elmer Taylor told the hospital board Monday night. There are five full-time and two part-time employees to man the service during two shifts seven days and evenings per week. And there are two vehicles. Tayl$r says one of the problems is that the ministry has made the Goderich service into a regional one but there is no provision in the budget for this. Last year the two vehicles travelled 75,000 kilometres covering Goderich and district as well as Clinton,. Seaforth, Zurich and up to Winghaa<n. Patients are also transferred to °hospitals in London. All the staff and both vehicles are needed for such a busy service, explains Taylor. "There is no flexibility to cut operating costs," he says. "It's an expanding service but no. provision is made for this." The hospital board has decided t_o. submit its am- bulance budget toi the ministry as it is to see if the deficit will be picked up. If not, it will have to be ab- sorbed from other hospital funding, Another altern.itive is to turn the service back over to the ministry so it can be tendered out to a, private operatfi'f•. However, the, board is not too anxious to do the latter. Despite the fact that they are not finding the service very financially rewarding, they feel it is an important one to the people of the community.
