Retiring after 34 years
BY JOANNE
BUCHANAN
'there were, lots- of hugs
and kisses and elven a few
teats as Rose Fisher said
goodbye .to her kindergarten
class at ' Victoria Public
School last Thursday; -
Mrs. Fisher was saying
goodbye to "her. children",
for the last tune. After 34
years of• teaching, she has
decided . to: take ' an early
retirement -
"We don't want you to go.
We want you to come back,"
sobbed. a Grade 1 student
who had happened by her
'classroom.
Mrs. Fisher removed her
glasses and wiped her eyes.
"You can always come and.
visit me," she told him. He
seemed happy aboutthat,
gave her a big smile and ran
out of the room.
After the kindergartens
left, more Grade 1 students
and even some Grade 2 and 3
students- stopped by Mrs.
Fisher's classroom with best
wishes. They asked for her
`autograph' and got her to
look at their report cards.
She found time for each
one of them, always ready
with a compliment.
"Children have been my
life. I'm really going to miss
their companionship but I'm
sure they will come to visit
me," she said.
In total, Mrs. Fisher has
only been away from school
for 3% years since she
herself started kindergarten.
She wasthe former Rose
Bowra of Goderich. As a
child she lived on Cameron
Street and attended Victoria
Public School. After
graduating from Goderich
Collegiate, she attended
Stratford Normal School to
become a teacher.
The first three years of her
career were spent at a public
school in Saltfordteaching 40
students from kindergarten
to Grade 8. The rest of her
teaching career has been
spent at Victoria where she
has taught kindergarten and
Grades 1,2 and 3 as well as a
Grade 3,4 and 5 acceleration
class.
"I think teaching all dif-
ferent grades like that
helped to keep me fresh.
School never got boring,"
she says.
Mrs. Fisher has taught in
all parts of the Victoria
Public School building, in-
cluding the original old
building on the same site
which has since been torn
dog'
She has also taught
through two generations,
including a father, mother
and two children all from the
same family.
"One of my highest
compliments came from one
of my former students who
told me she had become a
teacher because of me," she
says.
Throughout her career,
Mrs. Fisher has been both a
teacher's teacher and a
children's teacher. She has
the respect of the other
teachers because as one ptit
ittt "She .was always so
organized, made sure her'
work was done and was there
when the kids needed her."
Looking on her as a friend
as well as a teacher, Mrs:
Fisher's students would
often visit her at her
Britannia Road home in the
summer months and go to
call on her and walk to school
with her during the other
months.
Mrs. Fisher says her

husband" Arnold jokes that
the school board could have
saved a lot of money by just
holding school in their house
since the children were
always there anyway.
Now that she is retired,
Mrs. Fisher says she hopes
the children will still come to
visit. For the first few
months she plans to keep
busy with preparations for
her son Garry's upcoming
wedding and she also looks
forward to visiting with her
two grandchildren and
daughter Deidre in
Australia..
Mrs. Fisher only took time
off teaching to give birth to
her two children. After that,
she was called back to 'help
out for one year.' ' ..
"I've been here ever
since," she says.

The Blyth Summer Down North, at 8:30; the at intermission.
Festival opens Friday, July 2 Gallery opening, 7:30; and Down North is the heart -
with the first of five plays, the renewal of The Food Spot warming story of an only
• - child from the city who is
sent to spend the summer in
Cape Breton on his grand-
father's farm. Suddenly this
lonely self-centered 13-year-
oldbecomes the focus of a
huge family of aunts, uncles
and cousins. He is almost
overwhelmed by the 12 -hour
days and his new extended
family.
Award winners
Monique Martin and Brenda Smith, Grade 6 students at
Victoria Public School, received academic achievement
awards at the school's annual awards assembly held last
Wednesday. (Photo by Joanne Buchanan)
Daryl Hemingway and Greg Lobb shared Mrs; Ore's
plaque for the top Grade 5 student et Hohnesville Public
School this Year. The plaque was presented by Marilyn
Drehmann at the sehool's Grade 8 grad ation ceremonies
held last Wednesday. (Photo by Joanne Buchanan)
Down North features a
large cast ranging in age
from six to 60. The in-
volvement of children from
the area and the use of
mature actors as the elderly= -
relatives brings reality to the,
play. A Blyth native, Torif
Bailey, 14, will play Guy
Deveau, 13. Catherine
Battye, 17; Peter Cook, 14;
and Craig Roulston, 6, will be
seen in important supporting
roles. Hugh Webster, a 30 -
year veteran of television
and theatre, stars as the
easy-going grandfather,
Gilles Deveau.
c
Janet Amos, the Artistic
Director of Blyth, has
written Down North for her
theatre. "I was inspired by
the book, My Grandfather's
Cape ' Breton but my
imagination went to work
and new, different,
characters sprung up. I've
incorporated a tale of old
and new love, and some
classic family squabbles so
the play is very different
from the • book",Amos
states.
Marcel Doucet, an
Acadian fiddler from
Chiticamp, Cape Breton
Island where Down North is
set, has composed and
rejuvenated folk tunes he
will play during the per-
formances.
Quiet in the Land team,
John Ferguson and Kerry
Hackett, will design sets and
costumes respectively. Last
year, Ferguson received
further national acclaim for
his sets for The Visit at
Stratford, Plenty at Toronto
Arts Productions, as well as
for Quiet in the Land at
Blyth.
Down North will run
throughout July in repertory
with Heads Ydu Lose.
Tickets are still available for
all dates and can be obtained
