(Photo byJoanne Buchanan) - Palliative care volunteers complete training course Palliative care volunteers have now completed their course of training which consisted of approximately 30 hours of movies, lectures, etc. The main function of palliative care is to assure that dying patients and their families are as comfortable as possible. Review charges The , medical staff has asked the hospital board to review all the medical items that are now being charged for in the emergency department. The staff feels that it is not appropriate to charge for some of the items now being charged for and that allowances should be made for needy patients who cannot afford to pay. Assess system HOSPITAL BRIEFS It will require capital dollars to be spent on deficits. To buy arthroscope The hospital is continuing to assess the Aladdin Insulated Tray . System of keeping food served the patients at. proper temperatures. A trial -of the. system will be conducted. during July. Discussions have also been held with American Hospital to assess their in- sulated tray system. In addition, a tray service system is avails le from American Hospital at apprornately half of the cost of the insulated system. Both American Hospital systems can be purchased or leased. Express concern Hospital adlninistrator Elmer Taylor and board chairman Bruce Potter have both expressed concern to the board about the Ontario Health Ministry's new funding scheme known as B.O.N.D. . (Business Oriented New Development): An arthroscope for knee and elbow surgery will be purchased at .a cost of $5,000 for Alexandra Marine and General Hospital. Share services Alexandra Marine and General Hospital: will be participating in the toltowing under the Ontario Ministry of Health Shared 'Services program: respiratory technology, library and • occupational health and safety,,as well dietary, biomedical engineering and speech pathology. Opt out The Alexandra Marine and General. Hospital Board has decided to opt out of this round of the Ontario Hospital Association's Central Bargaining with the Ontario Nurses Association. Re -appointed Durst, Vodden and Bender have again been appointed 'as the hospital board's auditors; the Bank of Commerce as its bank; and Frank Cowan Insurance.as its insurance agent. The hospital has art $8,960 insurance package, up only $300 from last year. She was born to the late Nelson and • Eleanor (Townshend) Crich of Goderich Township. She was a graduate of Goderich Collegiate and London Teachers College. She taught in Sarnia and London for many years until her retirement in 1980. She is survived by her husband, Ralph E. Lucas of London; children, -David of Sarnia and Drs. A memorial service under the auspices of the Ontario Association of Superan- nuated Women Teachers was conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 22 at 7 p.m. Pallbearers were nephews Terry Rutledge, William, Kenneth and Donald Crich, Michael Bell and Paul Crich. Interment was in St. James Cemetery, Watford. Family 'and friends returned to London and gathered at St. Luke's Anglican Church for refresh- ments. Marathon team runs through town Monday The • International challenge to visit the fair, Friendship Marathon team, using the world's original a group of young runners ' energy form -the iiman from Owen Sound, will ,be.... --kiss l-.--:.-<,;.�-C -arrying�'°their International Friendhsip Torch, the team will travel the 1200 mile distance •in twelve days. The team started from Ottawa and travelled across Ontario to its home city of Owen Sound. From there they will head south through Goderich and into Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky ane Ten- nessee. The team is divided into junior and senior divisions with the junior team covering the 350 miles between Ottawa and Owen Sound. The members of the team range in age between 11 and 13. The team runs in a relay format with younger members . changing every passing through Goderich Monday in their quest to carry a torch from the House of Commons in Ottawa to the World's Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee. Last year the marathon team passed through Goderich on its way to Cincinatti, Ohio but this year the young team will cover over 1,200 miles to the World's Fair. On Monday the group of runners will pass through town at about 3.30 pin. bringing greetings and exchanging buttons and badges.
