The outgoing social committee of Hattie Bolsby, Margaret DeBolt and Maureen Penn then took over the proceedings with the presentation of the second annual Freddy (frog) Awards. These are GLT's equivalent to the Oscars. Among those receiving awards were Warren Robinson, Shirley Hall, Joyce Kuran, Arthur Currie, Michael Watts, Rick Fisher, Ann Coulter, Marjorie McQuire and Garry Hunter. The nature of these awards may be explained by the fact that Garry Hunter received his Freddy in the music category for his tear -jerking rendition of "Swanee River" in "Opal's Husband". Stephen Norton was pleased to be able to an- nounce the directors for the coming season's plays. They will be Philip McMillan, June Hill and Jim Saar. And while the actual plays cannot be named at this time, they will include a drama, a comedy and a musical to be directed by Saar at the conclusion of the season. idPY 1r a3j138 OG ThflOA. Quilts to be displayed The enthusiasm for last year's quilt display at the Blyth Theatre has spawned a second expanded showing: opening with the theatre's first play, July 2 at 7:30 p.m. The quilts, quilted hangings and cushions on display here, are the work of five Grey and Bruce area women who have been meeting and quilting once a week for about seven years. Susan Rankin, Paula Dimeck, Jenny Iserman, Sandra Lang and Jop are good friends who find their "quilting bees" a necessary part of their artistic and social lives., They work well "together striving to take this traditionally social art form a step further into the gallery. However, it's not all quilting. Two of these women are mothers, all are avid gardeners, several have careers outside the home while two of them work as professional textile artists from their homes. Despite their varied goals and often conflicting schedules, they have succeeded in mounting their second exhibition in Q eight months. C Each member of the group brings a distinct sense of style and colour to the collection. Interspersed with the extensive selection of o pieced work are examples of trapunto, whole -cloth quilting, applique. and of "I special note, Susan Rankin's batiked fabrics. Some works are interpretations of rn familiar patterns representing the traditional heritage, others are ® I examples of the quilted 310 surface that goes beymd O decoration. Continuing throughout July, "A Collection of Quilting II" proves that quilt art has a future as well as a las
