recently for a reunion of World War I pilots in Ottawa, and got a chance to take a ride in the
Tiger Moth at Goderich Airport during a visit with the Hindmarsh.family. Catchpole is also

Author explains curriculum
DUBLIN - The personal
touch provided a clearer
understanding of a Ministry
of Education review to the
Huron -Perth Separate
School Board.
At the Board's June 14
meeting, education officer
Earl Knickerbocker explain-
ed a provincial review he did
of the board's intermediate
English curriculum. The
board had previously been
presented with the review
last fall, but requested the
author to personally explain
it.
' Evaluating or marking
student writing was the one
area where trustees Were
• concerned, as the review
suggested teachers put less
emphasis on grammatical
errors and more on the
students—reTdiness to read
and write. Mie. Knicker-
bocker said changes he sug-
gested for marking students'
work was probably going too
far for the simple reason it is
imposed on teachers.
A novelist himself, Mr.
Knickerbocker in the review
and orally encourages the
use of journals. These jour-
nals are for the students'
personal writing and he sug-
gested they not be marked
for grammatical errors.
Trustee Ted Geoffrey ask-
ed if emphasis on grammar
did not go hand in hand with
writing. Mr. Knickerbocker
said grammar provides a
basic building block, but if it
is overemphasized, a student
may become frozen when
trying to write.
The pros and cons of
language use and abuse,
such as obscene language
were discussed. Mr.
Knickerbocker suggested
even obscene language had
its place in literature.
Superintendent of educa-
tion John MacCauley said
_the ministry's review helped
to zero in on such things as
speech and writing. He said
workshops had been held on
speech and about 40 teachers
had been sent to a writing
conference. About 90 per
cent of the school's are hav-
ing silent reading time, one
suggestion in the review.
Workshops have also been
spent on evaluating and on
the use of journals.
Trustee William Kinahan
praised Mr. Knickerbocker
for explaing the review. He
said the review was written
-111 largaii"- that he didn't
understand.
"You said it better than it
read," said Mr. Kinahan.
