Dutch Elm Disease Dutch Ehn Disease was first noticed 'in Canada in 1944 and in Ontario in 1946. In the Port Albert area we can still see the occasional elm tree standing. On Highway No. 4, travelling north from Belgrave to Wingham, you tan see several elm trees which have survived the disease. Steve Bowers from the Ministry of Natural Resources, Wingham, is of the opinion that the trees which look quite healthy now, as they get older, will likely die from the disease. Bowers, who is working with trees, feels that some trees may have a built-in immuni- ty from the disease. When the disease strikes, it causes a wilting of the branches, yellowing of the foliage, and many bare patches: Elm trees that have an ornamen- tal value, such as trees in - your backyard, can be sav- ed, providing the disease has not progressed too far, by having a fungicide injected into the tree. rtstaiki, ions ANSTETT Harold Bettger, a past president of the Goderich Lions Club, installed his son Peter as the 198243 president of the Club last Thursday evening.
