Township Council met in regular ses- sion June 7. Of this amount, $69,000 was for partial taxes to Huron County; $10,139 was for road superintendent payroll; and $10,939 was for the Treasurer of Ontario for tile debentures. A delegation from Tuckersmith Township at- tended the council meeting to explain the operation of the day care centre there and to solicit a donation towards the operation off the Vanastra swimming pool. No motions were recorded and council postponed action until the next meeting. One - objection was receiv- ed from L. Liszkiewiez after the circulation of the zoning by-law. By-law no. 9,1982, a by-law to authorize a tile drain debenture of $33,800 on seven owners, was given three readings and passed. Tile drain loan applica- tions were approved (sub- ject to the availability of funds) for: T. Flynn, $4,000 on lot 30, concession 3; Jeff Seddon, $11,000 on lot 29, con- cession 3; and Jake Peters, $16,025 on lot 88, Maitland Concession. Building ,-permits were issued to: Elmer Potter to demolish a shed on lot 81, Maitland Concession; Jack Walker to enclose a porch on lot 18, Plan 22; Stephen Brennan to build a log house on lot 5, concession 1; Ministry of Community and Social Services to build washrooms on lot 13 and 14, concession 1; Thomas Fl for a swimming pool on lot 30, concession 3; Larry Stur- dy to demolish a hen house on lot 20, concession 7and J. Tebbutt for a mobile home on lot 80, Maitland Conces- sion. The clerk was instructed to advertise for sale the nor- thwest drag line owned by the township. Council then adjourned to June 21 at 8 p.m. Blyth native takes lead Tom Bailey, a Blyth native, will take the lead as Guy m the Blyth Summer Festival season ' opener, Down North. Like Guy, Tom Bailey's birthday will be celebrated that July 2 night. Tom's performing career began with they festival's children's drama workshops in 1980-81. There, his con- siderable actingtalent_ v s recognized by Janet Amos, Down North's author and Ar- tistic Director of the Festival. Amos explains, -Tom is so good, I feel I can give him really meaty emo- tions to portray. It's such a relief knowing I have so- meone good in that part." Similar encouragement from his audience and. from his parents have led Tom to consider a career as playwright and actor. Tom's first play is an intricate play within a play murder mystery. Tom says the scariness of the festival's I'll Be Back Before Midnight stayed with him for six mon- ths and influenced his choice of genre. He hopes his play will be produced by this sum- mer's children's workshop, failing that, by his high school next winter. From a large family himself, Tom will play an on- ly child who is sent to his grandfather's farm on Cape Breton Island and en- counters the hard work and love of an extended rural family. Tom says he has more discipline than the city -raised Guy. It comes from his parents and the summer chores he. per- forms: making meals and cutting grass. Tom is the on- ly child at home now — brothers: 34 'apt 29, sisters: 30, 29, and 20 so he knows the contrasts between being alone and a full house. "The family gets together Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas and since there is -no holiday between Easter and Thanksgiving, my birth- day is used," says Tom. This year's birthday should be extra special, with a gathering of relatives for Tom's day, a gathering of players for Guy's birthday; and the celebration of the opening of Blyth's eighth season. Down North plays July 2. 3, 8, 9, 13, 19, 15 -mat., 17, 19, 20, 22 -mat. and eve., 23 and 31, l preview on July 11.
