HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1982-06-09, Page 7The Reverend William Craven was honored in a special commemorative service Saturday ' by the congregation of St. Marks Church, Auburn hi honor of his 50th anniversary in the ministry. Members of the family attending the special service and surprise reception at the Auburn Community Hall included his wife, son Rev. BM Craven and daughter, Pam Meriam. ( Photo by Dave Sykes) Minister honored on service St. Mark's ` Anglican Church was filled to capacity last Saturday afternoon to honor Rev. William Craven Sr_ who has been in the Anglican Church as rector for 50 years. The Rev. Robin Lyon rec- tor of Blyth and Brussels churches officiated and the church organist Mrs. Mur- ray Nesbit was at the organ. Rev. Lyon welcomed all and congratulated Rev. Craven on his 50 years in the ministry serving the church. Communion was celebrated with Rev. Lyon and assisted by Rev. William Craven Jr. and Mr. James Towe. Dur- ing the service Mr. Dick Snell read a letter of con- gratulations from Rt. Rev. Morse Robinson the Bishop and also one from Rev_ Gor- don Reynolds of Hanover. Guests were ushered by Dennis Schneider and David Leibold_ A yellow corsage was presented to Mrs. Craven and a yellow bouton- niere to Mr. Craven. -Follow- ing the service a reception followed in the community hall and guests were receiv- ed by Mr_ and Mrs. James Towe_ The tables were decorated with candles and flowers and a large decorated cake in the shape of 50 was the centre of the head table. Master of ceremonies was Mr. James Towe_ Rev. Richard Hawley led in a sing -song accom- panied by his wife Linda_ Mr. Towe introduced the head table which included Rev: and Mrs. William Craven, Rev. William Craven Jr. of London, Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Merriam and David, Goderich, Rev. and Mrs. Robin Lyon, Brussels, Mr. and Mrs. James Towe, Donald Cart- wright, people's warden and James Schneider, rector's warden and Mrs. Schneider. Donald Cartwright propos- ed a toast to Rev. Craven and Mr. Vic Stackhouse read an address of congratula- tions and Jim Schneider presented a Stole and a book on behalf, of the St. Mark's . congregtion. Rev. Mr. Craven reminisced about .his 50 years in the ministry and thanked everyone for their gifts and then he and Mrs. Craven cut the cake. A smorgasbord dinner was set up by the ladies. Minister ordained Knox United Church held a special service last Sunday op the occasion of the ordina- tion of Richard W. Hawley who has been the student minister for the last three years on the Auburn Charge of Knox United and Don- nybrook United Churches. Mr. Hawley was ordained last Wednesa at his- home church in•Caiibridge. The church was filled to capacity with relatives. and friends from Cambridge and members and friends from Auburn, Londesboro and Donnybrook. Assisting in the service ' was Rev. Robert • Scott, Londesboro, pastoral Charge Supervisor, Rev. Ruggles Constant, of St. Paul's United Church, Dun- das and Rick's former minister at Wesley, Cam- bridge. The service of song was led by the church organist, Mrs. Florence Wightman and Mrs. Nancy Park on the piano_ Mrs: Don- nie Armour of Waterloo sang the solo, and solo parts in the anthem were taken by Mrs. Nancy Park and Greg Wilson.. The .Junior choir under the direction of Mrs. Rick Hawley sang, accom- panied by Mrs. Barry Milian. Guest speaker was Rev. Wilena Brown minister of Varna -Goshen Charge. She had been Mr_ Hawley's Educational supervisor at Emmanuel College. She told Mr. Hawley that it was time for a great celebration for someone to join the ranks of the I'chur"ch as he had done this past week. Rev. 'Brown . closed her message by stating that this is a new ven- ture when you and Mrs_ Hawley and two daughters, Beth and Amy go to their new charge • at Sault Ste Marie the end of June and asked the Spirit of God to be with them.
