Year ago when labour
was cheaper and living
expenses lower, the ordinary
country newspaper, not
more than half the size tithe
Goderich Star of today, cost
EMI" l.5n to $22-90 4 Ire8.1%
Those were the days when
postage had to be paid and

press. But all those things
have changed, and the
Dominion Government is the
greatest sinner in putting an
extra tax on the people. -3t
will not be in the distant
future when people must pay
at least $1.50 in advance for
the local paper throughout
the country.
The grant to the rural
public schools will in the
future be paid in two in-
stalments. The first in-
stabnent, paid sometime
after August 1st, will be
made up as follows: First, a
grant of $20 to all schools
whose teacher holds a first
or second class certificate,
and second, a grant of 40 per
cent on the amount of salary
paid over $300 for the year
ending June 30th 1907.
At a meeting of the Public
School Board on Tuesday
evening the resignation of W.
Harvey Bryans, principal of
Central School, who is going
into military service, was
received and accepted.
The Goderich Red Cross
campaign was concluded on
Saturday May 30th. So far as
known the local campaign
was unique in all Canada in
that no committee of can-
vassers were organized, the
people being asked to come
to the central office and
make their donations
voluntarily. The sum of
16,000 was asked 'Tor and a ,.
total of $6,347.25 was
received from all sources.
Last night was an un -
portant one in the history of
the First Goderich Sea
Scouts Group, when A.
Fleming, of London, field
secretary of the Sea Scouts
of Western Ontario, and Aler
Huddy, district com-
missioner, of Clinton, came
here for the purpose of
presenting a charter to
Skipper A. Norman and his
group, which now numbers
eighteen.
A large congregation
attended the 98th
Anniversary service of
Christ Church, Port Albert,
Sunday afternoon. Rev. H.L.
Jennings, minister of Christ
Church, was in charge -of the
service.
Due to poor weather and
the fact that exams start
June 12, it has been decided
to postpone the annual GDCI
field day until next fall
An all-out war between the
pupils of S.S. NO.3 and the.
starlings, which has been
raging for several weeks,
ended on Friday with the
pupils being declared the
winners.The school teacher,
Ross Errington, mapped out
the strategy of attack and
posted a list of awards for
those pupils who brought
down the largest number of
the nuisance birds. Awards
points wer \given as follows:
a starling egg, one point;
right leg of adult bird, two
points; leg of young bird, one
pout. Cecil Cranston was
declared grand champion
with a total of 117 points.
Barbara and Mary Purdon
won forst prize for the best
display of starling eggs and
legs..
The Goderich Recreation
and Community. Centre
Board discovered that fund
raising' for the arena will
have to be continued after
reviewing figures at their
regular monthly meeting
last Thursday. Arena fund
raising campaigners
realized their community
support goal after almost a
year of campaigning but now
board members discovered
that interest payments and
additional painting costs will
also have to absorbed by the
community.
A debate which local
Progressive Conservative
organizers have arranged
between the PC candidate
Anson McKinley and Liberal
incumbent Jack Riddell has
a large question mark
hanging over it, The dabate,
which Goderich PC worker
Kim Ainslie termed a,
"challenge debate" is not
acceptable to the Liberals in
terms outlined by Ainslie.
What's more, PC Anson
McKinley said early Wed-
nesday morning he did not
authorize a challenge debate
and will not participate in
any debate to discuss only
certain pre -arranged issues
with only the Liberal can-
didate present.
