Four GDCI athletes
The GDCI track and field team
registered their strongest showing ever in
the OFSAA Western Regional Track and
Field Meet, held in Kitchener over the
weekend, with four athletes qualifying for
the OFSAA All -Ontario finals to be held in
Etobicoke, June 4 and 5. The athletes were
up against some stiff competition from
schools throughout Western Ontario.
Kim Fritzley placed first in the 100
metres semi-final event with a recordtim'e
of 12.9 seconds. In the 200 metre event,
Fritzley placed a strong second with her
best personal time of 26.5 seconds. Frtizley
came off a strong showing at the WOSSA
meet held in London earlier this month
where she place second in the 100 and 200
metre events.
Another bright star on the GDCI team is
Rob Plunkett who placed second in the
semi-finals of the 110 high hurdle event and
third in the final. Plunkett placed third in
the 400 metre hurdle registering his best
personal time of 57.5 seconds. According to
coach Phil Bugler, Plunkett is developing
into one of the finest hurdlers in Ontario
and he is confident that Plunkett will make
a strong showing at the All -Ontario meet.
Joe Melady and Deb Mitchelmore also
qualified for next week's meet. Melady
placed fourth m the Junior boys discus,
while Mitchelmore placed fifth m the 800
metre event with a personal best time of
2 311minutes.
Other GDCI athletes who performed
well but failed to qualify for the All -
Ontario were, Stewart Crew, Shawn
Doherty, Jackie Dalton, the Midget boys
and Junior girls relay teams, and Open
girls 4-400 metre relay team.
Absent from the team was Shawn Rah-
bek who suffered from a serious knee
injury during practice last week.

Goderich United A
continue .win streak
Goderich United 'A' soccer team con-
tinued its dominance in the second division
of the London and District Soccer League
with a convincing 6-1 vietory over the
Yugoslays from London this past weekend.
United is now in sole possession of first
place with a 4-0 win -loss record. Grand
Bend, with a 2-1 victory over Woodstock on
Sunday, is one point behind United, while
Woodstock is two points back.
The older Yugoslavian team was never
really in the game against the young,
hustling Goderich team. United scored
early and added three more before the end
of the first to put the game out of reach.
Unitedscored its first goal just 10
minutes into the match. Goalkeeper Greg
Smith threw a long ball down the middle of
the field and Bruce Melick.trapped it and
broke clear of the Yugoslavian defenders.
At the 18 yard line, Bruce kicked a low,
hard shot to the left corner that easily beat
the diving Yugoslav goaltender.
Within 10 minutes, • United added its
second goal on a headball by Rolf Gott-
schalk.
ottschalk. John Elliot, who played his best
game since joining United, crossed an
excellent corner kick and Rolf positioned
himself perfectly and headed the ball into
the top right corner.
in the 35th minute of play, United scored
again. Rolf set up Mike Hodges on a
perfect pass up the middle. As Mike ap-
proached the 18 yard line, he kicked a low
shot that beat the sprawling Yugoslav
goalkeeper.
As the first half was coming to a close,
United rose to the occasion once more.
Mark Bellinger passed the ball from the
corner to Brian Allen. Brian maneuvered
himself into the center of the field and
spotted John Elliot rushing in on the left
wing. Brian crossed the ball towards the
left corner of the net and John headed the
ball into the open, top left corner_
In the second half, United continued its
dominance, even though they played at a
slower pace. Around mid -way through the
hall, Bruce Melick scored his second goal.
Bruce had control of the ball deep in the
defenders' zone_ The Yugoslav goalkeeper
rushed out of his net to challenge the ball
and Bruce made a move to the inside and
kicked a low shot into the undefended net.
The Yugoslays scored their only goal
with 15 minutes remaining in the game.
Their center forward made some nice
moves on the United defence and booted a
low hard shot to the left corner. Greg
Smith made a valiant attempt at diving for
the ball, but he was only able to get a piece
of it and the ball dribbled across the goal -
line.
United finished off the scoring in the
dying moments of the game. Mark
Bellinger picked up the .rebound from the
Yugoslav goalkeeper and kicked a high
shot that just went under the crossbar.
As the season is progressing, it is evident
that United is playing with much team
effort. This makes it hard to choose
players for honorable mention. However,
United had certain players who displayed
an excellent effort on the weekend.
John Elliot turned in a super per-
formance with excellent hustle and fine
ball control. John is a newcomer •to United
from Clinton since the last few games from
last season. He is also the youngest player
for United at 19.
Rolf Gottschalk turned in yet another
solid game at his center -half position. It is
a.unanimous opinion that 'Rolf is the most
valuable asset to the United teain so far
this season.
Bruce Melick also turned in a corn- •
mendable performance at his center -
forward position. Bruce scored two goals
in Sunday's g?me and he is quickly
learning his position in just the few games
he has played for United -so far.
Sunday's game proved that not only does
United have a strong defensive core but
they are also quite capable of putting on an
offensive display. With this type of co-
ordination, United is going to be very
difficult to beat. And with the team effort
thus far in the young soccer season, it is
hard not to forecast successful future
events.
All of United's players have one major
goal and that is th make it into the First
Division for next season. A team is allowed
to move up a division if it finishes in either
first or second place in its current division.
With the type of play that United has thus
far exemplified, First Division is not an
unreasonable goal for this youthful but
experienced soccer team_
United's next game is Sunday, June 13 at
6 p.m. in Goderich. United will play host to
