Global reporter speaks
at CVVL spring luncheon
BY T. MARR •
"As an audience you have
the power to limit televi-
sion's power. You should not.
becontrolled by t,v.," Global
news 'reporter' •Christina
Poclunirsky told the St.
Peter's Catholic Women's
League last Wednesday.
Speaking at the League's
spring °luncheon at the.
Goderich Legion Hall,
Pochmursky described how
the news reaches the viewer.
&cording to the 35 -year-
old reporter,"Tao many peo-
ple acceptwhat is said on
t:fv°
There is a whole editing
process which takes place
and the viewer . should
understand it in order to be
aware of what is missing. An .'
intelligent viewer must fill in
the holes. If people are
aware of what happens
behind the scenes, they may
have a more intelligent reac-
tion towards the news,"
At Global, the editing pro-
-cess begins -when- - the-- --
assignement editor, John
Darby, decides which stories
will be covered and
therefore, according to
Pochmursky,. "The public
sees Darby's view of the
world."
Pochmursky pointed out
that "a mixed bag is chosen.
We cannot have all of the
stories...on...the same emo-
tional level because news is
entertaiUment."
• Further , editing takes
place "when the reporter
decides what is the best way
to cover a story. Time
pressure, constraints of
distance and constraints of
who I can get to talk to are
another editing process," ex-
plained Pochmursky. She
added that .a "professional
t.vjournalist must be
ruthless and learn to cover
what is es,sential." •
The final editing stage, the
actual editing of the film, is
performed by an editor with
the help of the reporter. Ac-
cording to Pochnsursky, "for
every One and a half minute
story, 10 minutes of footage
is filmed and, in the frantic
rash, ideascan be lost." •
Poclunursky urged her au-
dience to . phone or *rite
news producers and ,voice
their opinions. "I don't think
you • should let any
newscaster dictate things to
you which you don't think
are right. We influence ideas
and opinions but you 'would
be surprised by the influence
of the public on t.v. news. It's
one of the ways we get an
idea of what is in good taste
or bad taste."
