news
Ontario Hydro won ap-
proval from the National
Energy Board (NEB) to ex-
port
xport elec*rleityy to General
Public Utilities via an under-
water cable across' Lake
Erie.
The NEB approved the 10 -
year sale of up to 1.2 million
kilowatts of electricity,
beginning in late 1985, to the
New Jersey utility on April
27.
A public hearing on the ex-
port application was_ held in
__0itawa laStJanuary.
The proposed sale must
still be approved by the
federal and provincial
cabinets before construction
can "begin on the 103 km
cable which will run from
Nanticoke, Ontario to Erie,
Pennsylvania.
Hydro estimates the
elec-
trWeity sale could mean $3
billion in revenue and 7,000.
man-years of employment
associated with building the
interconnection..
The export agreement will
not affect Hydro's commit-
ment
ommitment to cut its acid gas emis-
sions in half by 1990.
Greenpeace Pretest
The last of three
Greenpeace demonstrators,
who climbed ' a 198 metre
stack at Nanticoke
Generating Station to call at-
tention to acid rain, made a
safe descent on April 22. The
derionstrators had climbed
the stack early on the morn-
ing of April 19. All three men

ment, which went into effect
April l4.

Sipco Limited of Toronto

Hydro obtained a mice for
the oil that was higher than
its book value.

kilowatts, an increase of 13.3
per cent over the April 1981
