Hydro news Ontario Hydro won ap- proval from the National Energy Board (NEB) to ex- port xport elec*rleityy to General Public Utilities via an under- water cable across' Lake Erie. The NEB approved the 10 - year sale of up to 1.2 million kilowatts of electricity, beginning in late 1985, to the New Jersey utility on April 27. A public hearing on the ex- port application was_ held in __0itawa laStJanuary. The proposed sale must still be approved by the federal and provincial cabinets before construction can "begin on the 103 km cable which will run from Nanticoke, Ontario to Erie, Pennsylvania. Hydro estimates the elec- trWeity sale could mean $3 billion in revenue and 7,000. man-years of employment associated with building the interconnection.. The export agreement will not affect Hydro's commit- ment ommitment to cut its acid gas emis- sions in half by 1990. Greenpeace Pretest The last of three Greenpeace demonstrators, who climbed ' a 198 metre stack at Nanticoke Generating Station to call at- tention to acid rain, made a safe descent on April 22. The derionstrators had climbed the stack early on the morn- ing of April 19. All three men were fined $53 by police for trespassing Power Agreement Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation agreed to buy . 400 megawatts of electricity for 50 weeks from Ontario Hydro. The New York utility paid Hydro $303,000 U.S. per `day under the energy agree- ment, which went into effect April l4. Hydro Selling Surpluses Hydro sold part of its surplus inventory of residual oil at the Lennox Generating Station near Kingston. Over the course of a year, Rio Algom of Elliot Lake is tak- ing aking 225,000 barrels' for use in producing process steam for its mining `operations. The oil is being trucked to Elliot Lake. Sipco Limited of Toronto bought 210,000 barrels _ for resale in the United 'States,. and the oil is being, shipped by barge from Kingston. Hydro obtained a mice for the oil that was higher than its book value. Buyers for the remaining _ surplus 250,000 barrels are being sought. - Hydro will continue to maintain an inventory of about one million barrels at Lennox, enough to cover cur- rent urrent and forecast needs. Peak Demand Peak demand on Hydro's system for April was an estimated 15.8 million kilowatts, an increase of 13.3 per cent over the April 1981 peak. Ontario energy con- sumption for the month was also on the rise with a 6.1 per cent increase to 8.5 billion kilowatt-hours, compared to 8 billion kilowatt-hours in April 1981. Exports down Power exports to the United States fh April amounted to 868 million kilowatt-hours, four per cent lower thanin April 1981. The electricity sales earned Hydro a net revenue of $13.8 million. Jr. Ag. program Offered The Junior Agriculturalist program is now starting for another year. This is the tenth season for the Junior Agriculturalist Program: The Junior Agriculturalist Program is designed to pro- vide practical learning in agriculture for students from a non-agricultural background. The student must be 16 or 17 years old as of January 1, 1982, to be eligible for the program. The student is re- quired to work on the host farm from June 21 to August 20, 1982 with every other weekend off. As well,' the stu- dent receivesa training allowance of $16 per day of which the host fanner pays one-half. There is still lots of room for farmers interested in hosting a student for the summer. For farmers in Huron and Perth Counties, information and applications for hosting a student are available by contacting Don Dietrich at the ,Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, 913 Hibernia Street, Stratford, N5A 5W2, or by phoning 271-0280. a
