The Canada Safety Council
reports that the contributing
factors to injuries vary bas-
ed on the experience of the
victims. For first time riders
loss of balance is the main
factor while for experienced
riders it is irregularities in
the riding surface. . •
Here are the contributing
factors to injuries in order of
precedence for all levels f
experience:
1. Striking irregularities in
riding 'surface -30 percent;
2. Losing balance - 25 per-
• cent; 3: Slipping -off - 15 per-
cent; 4. Board slipping from
under victim - 10 percent; 5.
Jumping from board - five •
percent; 6. Falling while tur-
ning - five percent; 7. Others
-.10 percen
So, to tbe frequen-
cy and seve -"ty of injuries
riders should select well•pav-
ed authorized skating areas,
take their time in learning
and not attempt to negotiate
difficult manoetivres too
soon and wear footwear with
good skid -proof treads. Per-
sonal protective equipment
for the head, hands, elbows
and knees is a must.
