couple tour
around the world
BY KAE WEBSTER '
Robert and Sue Odely of
New Zealand have been
travelling around the world
for the past 27 months and
they are visiting with their
cousin, George Moncrief and
his wife, Bettyin Lochalsh as
they begin , their tour of
Canada.
Robert and Sue are on
leaves of absence from their
jobs without pay: They have
worked at jobs as they could
while on their world tour,
permitting them to stay
longer in countries to learn
how the people really live.
While in England they
stayed at New Zealand
House which is a hostel for
people from Commonwealth
nations. The rates are
reasonable and they provide
newspapers with job listings
for those who wish to find
work.
When Sue and Robert went
to find work in England, they
learned that there are some
two million people out of
work in the country which is
more than the whole
population of New Zealand.
Many Britons do not remain
at one job for any length of
time, leaving job openings
available. Both Sue and
Robert were able to find
work for three months
during their stay in England.
While travelling through
England and France, they
stayed in a van parking in
Caravan Parks similar to
Canada's trailer parks. In
Paris, they parked their van
for the night nearthe base of
the Eiffel Tower. At night -
you just pull the curtains and
go to bed.
In Yugoslavia they
travelled off the main high-
way and came upon a tiny
village of cave dwellers, all
dressed in black. Many of the
buildings in Yugoslavia,
East Germany and
Czechoslovakia have never
been repaired since World
War I1 as the countries are
very poor.
The stores have very few
items for sale and if you see
something you like, you just
grab it and hope it fits.
Military manoeuvres and
helicopters flying overhead
are constant reminders of
the communist governments
–. _---_which_ control these _ coun-
tries.
Theft was a pr Yarm in
Italy. The Italian thieves are
not above"stealing from your
van so Sue and Robert
parked. their van with two
others in a triangle with the
doors facing inward to
protect themselves.
The roads and buildings
have not been rebuilt since
the earthquakes and long
detours are necessary to get
from one place to another.
Sue and Robert remember
they were not impressed
with Venice. It was smelly
and they were glad to move
on.
Greece is• a very poor,
desolate country and
military action is evident.
They travelled through
Austria to the Riviera in the
south of France and on to
Denmark. Here they visited
a Lego factory where they
saw small scale models of
building built from Lego
blocks.
A meal for four people cost
$10 in Czechoslovakia
large bottle or. wine was $1.
You are not allowed to take
any money out of the country
and as things are so cheap, it
was a problem to spend what
Czechoslovakian money you
had before leaving the .
coun-
ty
Italy has many villas with
cobble stone streets which
still bear the marks of the
Roman chariot wheels.
Sue and Robert stayed in
Russia for two weeks. They
found clothing very ex-
pensive; a pair of pantyhose
cost $13, a jacket which
would 'sell for $100 here was
$450 and an . average style
pair of slacks cost $100. The
average wage is $380 a
month.,
A bus ticket for six cents
takes you all over the city
but Russians' travel outside
the cities is limited. Their
underground stations are
amazing.
While the tourist is allowed
to take pictures of the tourist
attractions, no pictures of
the military are permitted.
In Russia and other
communist countries, pens
and pencils are very ex-
pensive and the people will
ask for them.
In the next two months
before they return to New
Zealand, Sue and Robert
plan' to travel across Canada
--and -then--proceed:. down- the-_
Pacific coast to San Fran-.
- cisco and then home.
