other western countries. The
debt being carried and in-
creased by the Federal and
Provincial governments is '
staggering and a large pro-
portion of our taxes is now
used merely to'servicd that'
debt, never to be returned
for public benefit. Many
large energy projects, such
as the "Alsands" out west,
have collapsed in political
wrangling.
Antagonism between
government.. and industry
deepens. The government

Takes
• issue
Dear Editor,
• I would like to take issue
with some remarks at-
tribut'ed to Darcy
McKeough, the chairman of
Union Gas. It would appear
Mr. McKeough has looked
upon • the projected cost
figures. of natural gas and
determined that electricity
is, and will become even
More so, an attractive alter-
native. Therefore, Mr:
McKeough would like the
Government of Ontario to
tax hydro - thereby ar-
tificially raising the con-
sumers hydro bill, and at the
same time • keep Alberta
natural gas competitive.
• Mr. McKeough would have
the principle of power at
cost, which have served us
well since the days of Sir
Adam Beck, thrown out.
Small stuff you say! When
principles are violated; there
is no end to compromise - so
let us drawthe lines now
before' it is too late. Allow me
to cite some areas of concern
pertaining to the above men-
tioned violations. Firstly, the
• subsidizing of rural
customers by municipal
customers a subsidy put in
place by the Government of
Ontario in January, 1982.
Secondly, the grabbing of
some potential ,,revenues
from Ontario Hydro at the
.Bruce Generating Station,
over the sale of surplus
steam, and, thirdly the pro-
spect of mammoth increases
in water rentals at hydro
electric generating stations.
The ' Ontario Municipal
Electric Association is ' the
CELEBRATE SUMMER
spokesman for over 320
municipalities representing
over 65 percent of the elec-
tric customers of Ontario. It
is composed of your elected
utility .commissioners and is
dedicated to the principle of
power at cost. It could be
asking politely for Mr.
McKeough to "butt -out". As
an electric customer you
might add your voice to
those concerned with keep-
ing your hydro bills at cost
by supporting your utility
and the 0.M.E.A.
Sincerely,
Jim Peters,
P.U.C. Commissioner
