win gold at WOSSA
The mixed doubles team of
Helen Conlon and Chris
Starkey took home the gold
medals in the W.O S:S.A.
Junior Badminton Cham-
pionships held in Sarnia on
Saturday. Also competing
for G.D.C.I. was Kelly
Brown who came fifth. Their
combined, team total of 11
points placed them third out
of the 25 schools entered,
behind London Westminster
and Stratford Central. Helen
and Chris had previously
won the Huron Perth
championship and Kelly was
the runner up in the girls'
singles.
Helen and Chris, after a
bye in the first round, beat
the St. Joseph's team 15-9
and 15-4. They then faced
Norwich in the best set of the
day, downing them 15-12 and
15-13. Their closest match
was against Westminster 8-
15,15-7 and 18-13. They came
from a 6-12 deficit in that
final game to force a tie
breaker, eventually
triumphing with five straight
points. This gave them the
championship but they had
to defend their title against
the consolation champions
who proved to be Norwich.
