rges simple spelling of words
Dear Editors,
Recently H.R.H. Philip
Duke of Edinburgh endorsed
the consept of making
English spelling easier to
reed by abolishing silent and
deseptiv letters in words. As
patron of the Simplified
Spelling Society, Prince
Philip sent the following
message tu their third Inter-
national.- Conference on
Reading Spelling :
To simplify the spelling of
English has been the ambi-
tion of any number of
reformers. A few successes
have been achieved, largely
in the United States of
America, but otherwise little
has happened. One very.
good reason for this lack of
progress is the, not unex-
pected, inability of the dif-
ferent reformers to agree on
a common system. It would
be nice to think that the
Third International Con-
ference will have some
achievements to its credit
and I wish all the delegates
the very best of luck.

Duke of Edinburgh
The Ontario Minister of
Education does not agree
with Prince Philip. She ban-
ned a dictionary that has'the
short spelling of "THRU".
She said tu me that'"T-H-R-
U" is "an aberration".
Perhaps this minister does
not no that unlike Celtic
Welsh and Gaelic, English is
a composite of mainly Ger-
man and French plus a ma-
jor shift in vowel pronoun-
ciation. At one time, "thru"
and "laf" were pronounced
with a now unheard "gh"
throat sound. Now the "gh"
symbol is but an redundant
antique vehicle.
I urge all peepol, including
newspaper editors, tu spel
