Representatives reminded the meeting that. the United Church was a conciliatory church with equal represen- tation from local churches to Presbytery, Conference and General Council. It is in these courts that policies are set they stated. However, delegates, because of economical conditions, argued for greater local autonomy. Clinton-Seaforth Area Representative MICHAEL FALCONER 153 High Street Clinton 482-9441 VIA charge, warned ministers that their control of the floor was generating a one-sided debate. She told the delegates that "you better Listen, and listen good, . to what these. people are say- ing." The memorial was passed with concurrence and will be forwarded to Conterence. Assessment Questioned London Conference is pro- jecting an increase in assess- ment to charges of approx- imately 45 cents per member 'per year. This would be the first increase in several years and brings the rate to $1.35. The Presbytery finance committee brought in a recommendation to limit the increase to 20 cents stating that the church should follow the lead it asks the govern- ment to take in reducing costs. After a lengthy discus- sion -delegates reduced the recommendation still fur- ther to 10 cents. Representatives also ex- pressed anger at Canex of- ficials for what was con- sidered questionable ethics by the church's publishing house. Mrs. Myrtle Walkom, chairperson of the Division of Communication, presented the resolution on behalf of the Administrative Board of Huron -Perth Chris- tian Resource Centre. The concern stemmed from what was charged to be two different messages be- ing circulated by a new Tel - order in -watts line. One message was directed to Resource Centres and the other to ministers. Apartheid Policy On another financial mat- ter Bill Davis,-- treasurer of the United Church of Canada, was asked about the church's position on apar- theid in South Africa and the involvement of Canadian banks. He stated that the church has taken a strong position because some banks are involved in lending monies which ' strengthen apartheid. This concern is' being expressed by the na- tional church at banks' an- nual Meetings. "What is your stewardship in regard to your personal bank account?" he asked. "Don't underestimate the ef- fect of personal action. In- stitutions listen," he stated.. In answering a query about the church's position, Davis told the delegates that the situation was being con- tinually monitored and it was felt to be well founded. At future meetings delegates will lunch on "soup and sandwiches." The suggestion carne from the Division of World Outreach to reinforce awareness of the world situation and the con- dition of the hungry. Reverend Roy Babstock, Stratford, indicated to the court that 19 charges had ac- cepted the goal suggestions of the Stewardship Commit- tee, 18 had set lower goals and five. higher. After the noon meal Reverend Maurice Francis, Thamesview, showed a visual appeal for Queen's Theological College, Kingston, narrated by Roy Bonnisteel. It was followed by a notice of motion that each congregation be en- couraged to support the ap- peals of Emmanuel College, Toronto, St. Paul's, Waterloo, and Queen's: • Pastor's Son Candidate Hugh David Moore, son of St. Marys pastor Reverend William Moore, was ac- cepted by Presbytery as a candidate. It was also recommended to Conference that Reverend Allan Grosse, MONUMENTS MARKERS -CEMETERY LETTERING MONUMENT CLEANING & REPAIR PRYDE MEMORIALS GODERICH - CLINTON - EXETER Phone 524-6621 DON DENOMME - AREA REPRESENTATIVE . formerly of Thames Road, be reinstated as a minister of conference. Grosse, _- now teaching, plans to become a missionary, possibly in Kenya, -Five vacancies were declared in the Presbytery and it was announced that Reverend Robin Roberts will be moving back to Huron - Perth as minister of Dungan- non. To Celebrate Chairman Roberts recognized Reverend Ure Stewart of Seaforth who has served 75 years in ,the ministry. Reverends Lester and Seibert, both of Strat- ford, were recognized for marking 50 years. The court also recognized` Reverend Thomas Fleethain of Fordwich and George Cowan, lay - supply, of Dungannon who will be retir- ing, Reverend Robert McMullen of Brucefield, who will be taking a position with Lambton Conference Centre and Richard Hawley of Auburn, who will be ordain- ed by Hamilton Conference. New Chairman Reverend Norman Gibson, Central United Church, Stratford, is the new chair- man of Huron -Perth. Turn around. MINISTER'S STUY BY THE REVEREND ROBERT J.CROCKER, RECTOR, ST. GEORGE'S ANGLICAN CHURCH, GODERICH We hear about people being "turned on" by drugs or by alcoholic beverages. They tell us that they turn on to certain TV programs and by the kind of music they particularly like. But I am more interested in getting people turned around - which may be difficult. There are at least two sides to you and it is difficult to see more than one at the same time, like trying to see both sides of a coin. You might use a- mirror and see both sides almost simultaneously. It may help us to see ourselves in a mirror, too. At least we would see more clearly what other people see when they look at us. Even so we have a lot of difficulty seethg our backs. You will see what I mean if you try to shave the back of your neck while looking in a mirror. While I am not trying to say that God will help you see the back of your neck, I do know that he can help you observe the other side of yourself. Conversion means being turned around in the right direction. The side you see may not be your best side, and you may need to be. turned about. In the parables of the lost ' sheep, the lost coin and the lost son, Jesus indicates. concern for those who are missing, lost, injured or damaged. If you are a damaged coin and have therefore been devalued - even the slot machine ,, refuses to accept your Jesus can be a kind of "bent coin release" that puts you into circulation again. I mean that you may be missing some aspect of yourself, which is quite within your power to use for yourself and for, other people,., It involves new at- titudes'to life, a keener eye for beautiful things and a new sense of the relevance of `being where you are now. God, as revealed in Jesus Christ, can help you find your best and truest self. HAPPY 0 NAVE SERVED YOU FROM FRED BRUINSMA Custom Buildings.Nouses.Additions.8 Renovations.
