BY JOANNE
Goderich Little Theatre is
closing another season in
style with its production of
"The Solid Gold Cadillac".
The play, which is as classy
as its title, opened last
Thursday at MacKay Centre
and will run again this
Thursday, Friday and
Saturday evening.
Director Joyce Kuran has
-Chas-err a 'fine caat''far this
two act comedy written by
Howard Teichmann and
George S. Kaufman.
Kathy ;Jenkins, a perennial
GLT favorite, is her usual
comic self as Mrs. Laura
Partridge, a two-bit actress
who is offered a job in a huge
corporation in order for the
corporation's board to keep
her from"asking-too many
disquieting questions about
the way things are run. As a
small shareholder in the
corporation,. she is put in
charge of shareholder
relations cemplete with her
own secretary (Renee
Lortie) and office. She then
begins an innocent letter

CoWarren Robinson is
another -main character in
the play and he turns in an
admirable performance as
Edward L McKeever, a
boisterous politician who
was formerly owner of the
corporation which Mrs.
Partridge works for.
Robinson shines in the scene
in which he gives an overly -
dramatic 'recitation' for
Mrs.•Partridge.
Although Maureen Penn
appears only briefly as Mr.
McKeever's---secretary,---her
performance is one of the
comical highlights of the
play.
The 'four ugly corporation
bosses' are portrayed by
Michael Watts, George
Young, Rick Fisher and
Doug Bundy. They are a
despicable lot who concoct
dirty deeds but get their due
in the end.
Shirley Hall puts in a short
but memorable appearance
as the sexy Miss L'Arriere.
Other members of the cast
include Scott Wilson as Mark
Jenkins, the corporation's
mail room boy; John Kuran,
Arthur Curie and Hattie
Bolsby as newspaper
reporters; Arie Van-
derEnde, Bill Wilson and
Ruth Guerts as television
and radio reporters; Jen-
nifer Black as the little old
lady and June Hill who
narrates the production..
"The Solid Gold Cadillac"
leaves the audience smiling
and anticipating great things
from- Goderich Little
Theatre next season.
By the way, mention
should go to Ann E. Coulter,
assistant director of
Cadillac, for the beautifully
designed program.
Warren Robinson as Edward McKeever and Kathy Jenkins as Laura Partridge are two of
the main characters in GLT's final production of the season, "The Solid Gold Cadillac". The
two act comedy opened last weekend at MacKay Centre and will run again this Thursday,

Ragtime coming
John Arpin who went from
playing classical music as a
young prodigy to playing
classical ragtime as one of
the foremost popular
pianists in the world comes
to Blyth Memorial Hall for a
concert on Sunday, May 9 at
2 p.m.
Arpin's love affair with the
piano started young, when
he began taking lessons at
age four. By age seven, he
was already composing, a
skill that would lead him
over the years to pen hun-
dreds of compositions in-
cluding his most ' famous
"Jogging Along" which has
become the theme for Don
Harron's Morningside radio
show. He set his sights on
becoming a classical concert
pianist and by age 16 had
completed his solo per-
former's degree and
graduated from the Royal
Conservatory of Music.
He then joined the Univer-
sity of Toronto's Faculty of
Music and at the same time
taught theory, harmony,
counterpoint and form at St.
Michael's Cathedral Choir
School in Toronto.
But along the way Arpin
took a job playing organ in a
hotel, entertaining guests for
$80 a week. Then he joined
Leo Romelli's orchestra at
the King Edward Hotel in
°Toronto and soon he had
caught the bug for jazz, and
particularly ragtime. With
the rebirth of , ragtime
through the success of the
movie The Sting, new notice
came to the old and difficult
piano form and John Arpin
quickly became recognized
as one of the best in the
business. Tune magazine
calls him one of the best two
or three ragtime pianists in
the world.
Although ragtime has .
made Arpin famous around
the world, he has a great
deal of variety in his perfor-
mances. In his concert, he
shows how popular 'music
has changed since the styles
of the 1890s to the present.
zit's a variety absorbed over
years Of doing television
recording and concert work
with stars such as Perry
Como, Bob Goulet, Vic
Damone, Edie Adams and
Shirley Jones. As well as ex-
amples of ragtime, blues,
stride piano, be -bop and
jazz, his Yamaha grand
piano will jump with Arpin's
own compositions. His recor-
dings will be on sale on the
day of the concert.
A limited 'glibber of
tickets for this last event of
the 1981-82 Blyth Centre for
the Arts music series from
the box office at 523-9300. All
'seats are $8.
