He stressed the importance of becoming safety conscious to prevent accidents and also of lear- ning first aid techniques. The speaker stated that places of industry are now safer than either the highways or homes. One of the most common home accidents to, children is poisoning. There are, about 250 poisonous substances' in the average home, and these should be carefully guarded if there are small children. Falls are also often causes of injuries to seniors resulting in seven out\ of 10 'victims over 65 having , to be admitted to hospital. St. John Ambulance has become very active in educating the public in basic first aid • procedures and manual skills to help, preserve life, minimize the effects of injury and promote recovery. In the past three years, training programs have increased by. 300 per- cent. These courses are free and are supported through `public donations. Mr. Renaud mentioned . two. courses suitable for seniors are 'Health Care for Seniors' and 'Lifesaver' a 21/2 hour. course teaching skills which could save a life. Another important service. to the community by the, St,. ,John' Ambulance Brigade is their attendance, at all games and public events. The unit is always present and ready for_ any emergency with qualified attendants. Equipment is expensive; a new unit will be needed next year at a cost of $22,000. The organization is dependent on the financial. support received from residents of the community in response to its annual appeal. David' Harman, a former instructor and co-worker with St. John Ambulance, thanked the speaker for his excellent presentation. Les Evans gave a brief New Democrats meet All across Ontario New Democrats will be using the month of May to find out what issues are of most concern in their area.
