Hydro Chairman Hugh Macaulay responded strong- ly to criticism of Hydro's proposal to export surplus electricity to General Public Utilities of New Jersey at a news conference held February 23. Macaulay told a .large group of reporters that ex- ports or no exports, Hydro will cut its acid gas emis- sions by 50 per cent over the ' next 10 years, while produc- ing More electricity. Far from discouraging U.S. utilities , from taking steps to -curb their own emis- sions, Hydro's program "should be used as an exam- ple we want the Americans to follow," Macaulay said. Exports w Power exports to the U.S. for February amounted to over a billion kilowatt-hours - up slightly from .the February 1981 figure of 965 million - earning a gross revenue of more than $40 million. Peak and energy demand Peak demand last month was -17,054,000 kilowatts, up marginally from 16,991,000 kilowatts in February, 1981; Ontarians consumed 9,1 ,738,000 kilowatt-hours of energy last Month, up 5.9 per cent from 8,675,758,000 kilowatt-hours a year ago. Mock emergency A provincial emergency planning exercise based on a simulated accident at the Douglas Point Nuclear Generating Station was held February 9-10. Designed to test internal response and communica- tion procedures during an emergency, the exercise in- volved about 100 represen- tatives from government ministries, area municipalities, police and Ontario Hydro, under the direction of Provincial Emergency Planning Co- ordinator Ken Reeves. Exer- cises of this nature have been held on a regular basis since 1979. • Pressure tube leak Ironically, February 9 was also the date when Unit 2 at the Bruce "A" Nuclear Generating Station (on the same site as Douglas Point) was shut down following the discovery of a small leak in one of the reactor's 480 pressure tubes. The leak was the result of incorrect installation of the pressure tube - a similar. problem to that faced by Units 3 and 4 of the Pickering "A" Nuclear Generating Station. The technique for pressure tube replacement has been well established. The leaky' tube at Bruce has now been replaced and the reactor is back in operation. Porter report Ontario Hydro has receiv- ed a report prepared by Dr. Arthur Porter dealing with the planning and approval process for new transmission lines in Southwestern Ontario. Dr. Porter, who was Chair- man of the Royal Commis- sion on Electric Power Plan- ning, reviews that process and how it relates to findings he made during his seven- year study. Copies of the Porter report, "Southwestern On-' tario Revisited," are available on request, at no charge, by calling (416) 592- 3703.
