I took my foot off the gas and began to coast to a stop. I never made it. The car hit' something and bonne - ed to the right, the steering wheel started to spin, cat- ching my arias and tearing the mocks in my shoulder. As suddenly as it began, the car came to a jarring stop. I couldn't see out the WitildnINS bat I knew I was in the ditch. The ear was en a forty-five degree angle. I tried to get out the door. No good; it was jammed shut. I tried the passenger door. 1twasjanedatso. The motor was shit nom- ing so I stayed put with the heater on full but soon the motor died and so iftd my heat. I jamped into the back seat and vdrapped myself in an old sleeping bag that was my constant back seat compa- Mom After a few moments, it began to get cold, vay cold. I tried both back doors but they too were jammed stmt. I rolled over on my back and held the door handle open and kicked with both feet un - the door opened. As 1 crmsled out the small opeohig, I knew why the dem woiddn't open. The Fed was burled tat past the back doors in snow. The wind was so string, it twe ene ef the gloves off my hand and I watched it disap- pear ammo the road into the • Wrapped up hi my old sleeping hag, I walked out onto the road. I was cold and sore. I knew this country hike thebackofmyliaiid,bUtI couldn't figure out where I was. There were no land- marks for me to lock into; the wind was too Strong; and the blowing sinew made it hard to see. Then, down the road, came a carload vi people who, believe it, or not, were on their way to Florida. They stopped and picked me i and took me back to their home in the Nile. Once there, they gave me day clothes and 9amething warm to eat and think, and a place to sleep for the night - In the nionlin g, the storm had subsided and after breakfast and a phone call to my boss (who, by the way, was not at all understarefteg!), they gave me a lift to my car. Atfirst. they tried to oull t 0 NEW YEAR'S EVE DANCE me out with their half ten but the Ford wouldn't lodge. Nest, they welt home and brought back their front end loader. They had quite a time to get me out and at one point had to pull themselves and my cas. out of the each using the bucket on the leader. They helped me clean the snow out h -em under the hood and juniper started my ear. For doing all this, they didn't ash for a dime, just shook my hand and drove off home. Every Chnstims since then, I remember them. I don't reniember their names; just that they lived in a big new house in the Nile and must have owned a con- struction cosontny. I wish to thank them now, for if it wasn't for them, I inlet have &min to death that night. I woukki't now be married or have my son. Everything I am, I owe to them and their family.
