Government continues to ignore farm plight
!Biqa& Riddell
The Government of
Ontario continues to ignore
the alight of the farmers
caught in the stranglehold of
Unbearable high interest
rates, Few fanning
operations ears survive under
the present economic con-
ditions. In persistent
quesaioning tone Minster of
Agriculture and Food and
the Treaserer. Frank Miller.
• I have pointed out that tbis
inaction is trading to the
total dinintegration of our
agriculture industry
It is regrettable that the
Minister of Agriculture,
•Lone Henderson, is finch*
the fanners to lash out
through hie lack of action. A
major deinonstration by
farmer! occurred in Owen
Sound a few weeks age. Last
week some 150 farmers
blocked off Highway 417 east
of. Ottawa. And this week, a
demonstration of over 500
farmers and concerned
citizens took piece at Port
Elgin in Western Ontario.
Henderson continues to
reply that he has provided
some limited •assistasce to
the beef industry, but
ignores the fact that the
overriding concern facing all
sectors of the agriculture
industry in this provthee is
high interest rates.
The Emergency, Task
Force on Agriculture of the
Ontario Federation of
Agriculture in their recent
report to the govennnent
stressed that the fannersare
facing an "emergency"
situation andthat immediate
government action is
required. The longer the
Minister delays financial
assistance programs, the
greater the number of our
efficient farmers that are
forced into bankruptcy.
Stocker Cattle
Prop= expanded
Having alluded to the
Emited assistrusee to the bed
industry, I would like to
advise that coverage under
the Ontario's Stocker Cattle
Assistance Program has
been increased to allow
additional beef producers to
participate in it. The
program was initially open
only to those farmers who
bought at least 10 calves,
raised them in Ontario for at
least 150 days, and then sold
them for fildshing purposes
when they weighed 600
pounds or more. Those
fanners were eligible to
receive a grant of $20 per
head of cattle. The program
is now open to all farmers
who sold 10 bead of beef
cattle for finishing in 1900 -
whether they were bought as
calves or raised by the
farmers themselves,
Amended application
forms for the Stocker Cattle
Aseistance Program are now
avails* in agricultural
•offices throughout Ontario.
Masteries greats
I am happy W report that
the Mowing projects have
been approved for assistance
under Wintario: The Tovm of
Seaforth Seaforth arena
repairs; Huron Country
Playhouse - upgrade
facilities; Mapleway Area
Guides - recreation facility,
Keewaydin; Town of Clinton
- purchase a timer clock,
conenunity centre; Town of
Clinton - install washrooms,
arena k Town ill Goderich -
renovate conmimity athletic
field; and Township id West
Williams - install Lake
Huron pipeline at com-
munity centre.
Propertylaz pants
While many senior:Khans
are upset and angry about
long delays in receiving
property tint grants, ap-
parently the Ministry of .
Revenue has paid out more
than $1.3 million in such
grants to people who 81'0
ineligible to receive them.
The overpayments in the
first year of the program
were sent due to a variety of
computer errors, Kaman
mistakes and lack of
program co-ordination.
Moreover, many senior
citizens are complaksbig that
it is almost impossible to get
through on the telephone
number published for
enquiries, and neatly' have
suggested that several more
lines or 'hone ;timbers are
urgently needed
