Shovelling cheaper
EXETER - Business people
in meter are going to learn
that shovelling snow is an
inexpensive chore, - com-
pered to finea that they'll
face for not clearing away
that white stuff.
Town council has passed a
bylaw stating that owners or
occupants of buildings
fronting Exeter's Main
Street will now face fines of
up to $500 for failing to
remove snow and ice from
sidewalks.

Not ready for Christmas
How the time flies!' It just
seems a few weeks ago that
'in Wndsor, I argued with
Walt to stay with. his brother
while I "went home - alone" -
i had a very good reason
for this - as I just couldn't
picture trying to feed and
care for more than 3101E in a
house that had to be made
over, rearranged, put
together,- and undone - and a
few other things, after a
winter of disruption, frustra-
tion. rebuilding and things. to
be finished— in a hurry'
I can't help but grin when 1
think of my first words after
I unlocked the door - "Good
heavens, what do I do
NOW'."
When , I left just before
Christmas, the tiny kitchen -
end of the wee house was be-
ing pulled down and 1 knew it
would look different - but
somehow I hadn't visualized
the change.
Anyway, the shock soon
wore off and I settled in t0
try to find the kitchen things
- about all I could do until the
flooring was taken care of
and then boxes could be un-
packed.
Several of my grand-
children turned up to do.
whatever they could - and 1
thanked the Good Lord for
such relatives as these.
Once the floor was
. covered. things seemed to
look brighter and I began to
see what could happen with
.'all that room" - something
you couldn't do before, the
big change.
By the time r Walt came
home. there was a
semblance of order = in ONE
big room t the rest were
packed to the doors a. He was
speechless - just kept looking
around. staying out of the
way and offering NO advice.
in three days you wouldn't
believe the things those kids
had accnmphshed - i fust

JOYED what was happen-

A lot of things have hap-
pened since thatfirst week.
I'm sure you know, without
my telling, that trying to un-
pack, put away, search for -
often finding things you
know you have - somewhere -
can take a lot of energy. I
would just fall asleep at all
_. hours, waken just as fast and
just keep going again. It was
GREAT to be home!
Granddaughter Sharon
came with her little Gremlin
and tried to help unravel the
confusion. Oh, the BIG room
was fine - the rest were in
trouble. One out of five - at
that time - seemed great
Sharon's Jason was a love-
ly child and we managed to
get a lot'bf things done. I was
sorry to see them leave.
I soon got into the swing of
things . after seeing old
friends and familiar places.
I enjoy Goderich-
Unpacking is just fine - if
you have a place to put the
thongs you unpack. When
this is a problem, itis REAL-
LY
EALLY a problem and I have a
lot of them. It is nice having
more room but you still need
help. I have accomplished a
great deal but it doesn't
show.
The summer was wonder-
ful, so was most of the fall
and the winter has been try-
ing to creep in -slowly - so
that I might get away before
it settled. down. But since I
haven't been settled down -
whatever that is 'things are
left unfinished and
Christmas time has arrived
and as always - I'm not
ready for it. But that's the
story of my life- When the
Good Lord says, "Come on,
Martha - time to go home",
I"m going to be saying, "But,
I'm not READY"" and I'm
afraid that's the truth!
Check the Bulletin, and the
stores have lots of GREAT
bargains. Try to catch them;
Love,
Martha.
Property taxes
rise in Wingham
WINGHAM - Wingham
ratepayers should brace
themselves for another
sizeable hike in property
taxes next year as council
struggles to maintain ser-
vices in the face of rising
costs and salaries.
This was the recent
warning issued by Wingham
town cauncll as they had
their first look at the
proposed budget for 1962
The buffet, prepared by
the general gaverninent and
planning committee,
projects a rise in speeding to
$1.9 -million nest year from
$1.6$-milliDn this year, an
increase of 16 per cent. To
meet that roue, however,
property taxes would have to
rise by 22 per cent 10 $1.9
million, a jump that some
councillors objected is en-
tirely too much to swallow.
Victoria Public School kindergarten students and Queen
Elisabeth School students were treated to a series of fairy
tale skits performed for them by a group of Kathnavlk
