The following ,ac comet of a
dangerous algid trip across
Lake Hereon vias written by
Oliver H. Kirk, 02 a resident
of Michigan Masonic Home
in Alma, Michigan and a
former resident of Goderie b.
Mr. Kirk writes ghee he
was preseuteri with his 910
year Mosonic pin in the
Michigan Home where he
lives and be states his desire
to visit the Gederich Masonic
Lodge.
"Often I have looked at the
entrauce to your temple
when getting a supply of
Culbert's baking. My folks
knew m`ss of the firibert
he
family," says.
Mr. Kirk writes that when
he was 13 or 14 ( just out of
high school), he was emm
played by the Itoyal Bank on
a corner of the Square and
slept in a lame roam above
the brak's.offieea. There was
a square. hole in the floor
where be was suppose to
shoot down at anyone
tampering with the vault
door. Two old pistols lay on a
library table.
A BOATING LESSON
It all started innocently
enough
Over the long weekendd,we
would go in Carson's cruiser
to Cove Island in Georgian
Bay, tie up at the lodge, do
some fishing and return in a
few days. Little thought was
given to the 250 miles of
water, bad weather,
darkness and the usual
safety precautions. It did,
however, occurs to me to
stand in our backyard the
1 not before to take a good
mental fix on the location of
themoon at 9 p.m.
Nezt moaning we met as
agreed, filled the gas tanks
on Carson's twin-screw
cruiser, . then went out
through the rows of markers
onto LakeSL Clair, andthen
l* the St. Clair River to Port
Huron where we cleared
with the Coast Guard station.
Nezt, we . pointed NEly
onto Lake'Burvn Itwasnear
dark when it occurred to me
to look up for the mom. One
gdck look told me we were
headed for the Straits of
Mackinac.
• htimediately we smug 70
degrees right, which we
believed to be NE1y direc-
tion
iarytier. On that adjustment, we
ran several mare hairs in
darkness. Then came a light
rain.
Across all that dark water
came a flash of fight. Was it
real? Then another Hash
followed by regular flashes
fran what appeared to be a
revolving light on the east
shore of _ Lake Huron. No
mere relianceon compass.
Next appeared the yellow -
green range lights that were
set on the ends of the Weak -
waters that extended out into
the . lake to,guide and
welcome all god navigators
(and the to safety -
At this time, I was stan-
ding with my head up
through the hatch inthe rain.
Even m the ram, it was a
great feeling to watch the
new breakwater wall go by
as our starboard side to a
pont where we made a
secure berm at2 a.m.
Corson went uptown to
phone home and to get a ,
roan for the night. Bilk and I
slept a caaple of boar's in the
hold.
Nezt morning the lake was
rains under a lnright sonny
haze as we Milled the tanks
and headed out through
those blessed breakwaters.
The windshield divider cast
a marrow shadow on the cowl
where I placed a matchbox
to be moved an inch to the
left eadi horar.
The next, wonderful sight
was looking mfr as we.passed
render the Blue Water Bridge
into the St. Clair River, then
across Lake St.. Clair and
back to the arra where we
tied up, got into our cars and
went home without saying a
word_ •
With the passing of many
years, I am convinced there
was a Suprene Being with a
guiding haled that night that
took us, in rain and
darkness, through the
freighter lanes from the
•tipper Lakes. across Lake
Virion, toga revolving light
and into Goderich Harbor.
A mere 60 years have
lapsed since I rode cry Mike
from the Godeln high
school to the little park
where that lighthouse
stands. On an occasional
fishing trip to Georgian Bay,
I drive down West Street to
- -tl . fae tet 3en.a
hat in hand. to thank that
Supreme Being.
