Florence M. Goodwin of
Huronview celebrated her
100th birthday on Saturday
with a family dinner at the
Bedford Hotel
Mrs. Goodwin was born on
a farm in Ehna Township on
December 13, 1881 to James
and Sarah (Ayres) Por-
terfield.
In 1903 she married
William John Goodwin. He
died in 1943.
The couple had three
children. They are Sally
Lambert of Watford, Robert
H. Goodwin of Goderich and
the late Mrs. Florence
Smelke. There are also six
grandchildren, 15 great-
grandchildren and one great-
great-grandchild
reatgreat-grandchild on the way.
Mrs. Goodwin lived in
Blenheim for more than 25
years and then Alberta
before moving to Huronview.
She still reads the
newspaper every day and
notes that the world has
certainly changed since she
was a girl.
Mrs. Goodwin feels she
owes her longevity to "just
living a normal life".
Friends and relatives were
present at her birthday
droner on Saturday from
Vancouver, Sudbury,
Mississauga, London,
Woodstock, Parkhill,
Watford and Blenheim. She
received congratulatory
plaques from Queen
Elizabeth II, Prime Minister
Trudeau and M.P.P. Jack
Riddell.
LLL to hear conference report
La Leche League in.
Goderich met last month to
discuss nutrition and
weaning. Many ideas were
brought forth.
On Thursday, December
17 at 9:15 a.m. a report will
be given on La Leche
League's International
Conference that occurred
this summer.
Sandra Billson from
Goderich, Janis Bisback
from Hensel' and Barbara
Kerr from Belgave joined
7,000 parents and health
leaders from 30 nations and
six continents for. the 8th
International Conference of
La Leche League at
Chicago's Conrad Hilton
HoteL
Over 200 speakers ad-
dressed the delegates at the
four day conference,
covering medical,
nutritional and behavioural
aspects of child care which
are directly relatedtobreast
feeding.
La Leche,, League is the
only lntecaatiorial
organization' whose major
purpose is to help. mothers
who want to breastfeed their
babies. The seven mothers
who founded the League in
1956, out of their own need
for information, had no idea
that 25 years later, their
organization would reach
one million mothers an-
nually.
La Leche League in
Goderich holds meetings
monthly to acquaint those
interested with the physical,
psychological and practical
aspects ofbreastfeeding.
Tice neat meeting is
Thursday, December 10 at 8
p.m. It will be held at 181
Rich Street, Godericb. The
main topic for discussion will
be, "The Advantages of
