Recalls... • from page 10A stopped earlier. How' we finally made it I can't recall but when we were making the turn onto the highway near the old. bridge there was no snow. From there on to Windsor we. were the only car with about a foot of snow on the top and in Windsor the neighbours came to make a snowball and laugh about it We were back to Goderich after Christmas and New Year's Eve went to the dance at MacKay Hall - the only winter dance place in Goderich I recall how the floor went up and down and I would try to stay near the perimeter when possible. That night we had a heavy sleet storm and it nicely iced the deep snow and we were in trouble. That storm turned into a blizzard and everyone was isolated for a full week - no trains, no traffic, NOTHING! Even feed for cattle, medicine and food had to be dropped for some who were really stranded. In February we had to make a trip to Wingham. I couldn't believe what I saw From Clayt Iaithwaite's farm, the crossbars on the poles were visible - then it got worse' Out of Clinton we travelled through tunnels with little "waiting.. spots so a car could pass when you met one. Our little cinderblock making shop was almost out of sight and Walt and Leo tunnelled their way in more than once. I have photos of this to prove it! By this time I had decided that many people in Goderich were great liars and if I could pile all the snow I had ever seen in my - life, it would not be as high as I had seen that winter. We even had to have snowplows come in from other areas to clean up the mess. I was sure we had slipped into the Arc- tic. So, there are great memories of that winter in many homes in Goderich. Let's hope there are no more repeats for a little while At MacKay Centre there is o cOr4 p"'t ' tonight For elatTer ems check the Bulletin Board. Love you, Martha
