About With
Martha P!>ethbiorrs
Our taste of winter over
the weekend was most plea
sant, f11h,1 didn't care for the
windshield scraping in the
icy wird Friday night, but
ice, wind or sleetwill will never
daunt a "Bridger", 1
Sunday was just beautiful
(and I got Mr, R. out of the
house) and most of our snow
melted, The first icy blast
reminds me of .la first
winter in f odeerkh - a shiver
runs up my spine! We arriv-
ed here inNovember 1946-a
cold windy day but later So -
meow assured me the
winterswere nice – "Yon
can always get around",Lit-
tle diel 1 know that 194647
winter was to be one that
even the Minters gave top
W o
lived on Wilson Street
near Britannia goad and 1
woad walk 66uptown° 'in
about 15 minutes, turn at
South Street to The Square,
gel to the butcher and
grocery shops and return
home via South Street mod
Britarmia Vesta. On
or fourth trip that November
1 was a little braver and in a
big hurry so deeided to take
a shortcut by way of Mon-
treal Street —I think.
Somehow 1 took the wrong
street can't rear
which one blutl ended upfae-
ing a wild river and wilder
lake - soy l kne=w l was tenet.
.1 decided not to retracew
steps but to follow the river
and along the lake and
sooner. or later 1 would get
back toWilsonStreet ' '
1'M sure it was an lour
later that 1 reached the top of
West Street as the men from
the elevators were en their
way home, Anyway, the icy
wind blowing about 40 m,p hd
had mee at a standstill and
after one of the men assured
me 1 was headed in the right
direction 1 continued my
freezingjourney,
When 1 saw the old Sunset
Hotel 1 knew 1 had arrived!
In this old home we had a
wood and coat fire - the fire
was OIPT, it was 5;30 and
Mr. IT, was home a few
minutes later, In my frozen
condition, l couldn't get that
doggone fire going,
NOTHING was going right.
Mr, It, had things going
quickly and dried my tears
but I still felt the worst was
yet to come,
I was right.
We were going home for
Christmas and the day we
were leaving, someone up
there was emptying the
goose down+ pillows - you
could barely see through the
huge snowflakes, Hayfield
Road was full of potholes so
we went to the first conces-
sion and headed out. There
were tracks in the snow for
the first short way, then no
more. We just tried to stay in
the middle of the road but
most of the time we were Just
guessing where we Were.
Soon, the SHOW Was so
deep, the fan was picking it
up and laying it on top of the
motor. This would splutter
and stop and we had to wipe
off the snow and wait mita it
would start again.
Oh, son Doug, about 15 or
16 years ofd then was with us
and more than once, he and I
would be pushing the car to
prevent it sliding sideways
into the ditch- what a trip! •
At one point when the
motor wouldn't start, Doug
headed Jacek towards a far-
mhouse he'd seen hoping
they had a tractor. He hard
gone about idtl yards when
the motor decided to start.
We backed up, picked bixin up
and went frail tilt ahead. We
stopped about a ear length
