Farmers
need help.
QUEENS
PARK
BY JACK RIDDELL,
The. report of the
Emergency Task Force of
the Ontario Federation of
Agriculture, has now been
made public and concluded
that fanners in this province
are facing an "emergncy
economic situation primari-
ly as a result of lhigh interest
rates."
This message seems evi-
dent to everyone concerned
about the agriculture in-
dustry except to the Minister
of Agriculture and Food.
Even his Deputy Minister
last we stated that Ontario
lacks an agriculture policy
and. that we stand to lose a
lot of our most efficie'
farmers m the next year if
nothing is done by the prp-
vince to help them.
This report confirmed
what we in the Metal Party
have been advocating for
some time now. In my sub-
mission to this Task Force, I
poiliteid out that Ontario
Farmers are at a disadvan-
tage when the financial
assistance provided to the
agriculture industry by
other provinces and other
countries are examined. It is
no ,accident that Quebec's
net fannincome last year in-
creased by 12.7 per cent
wee Ontario's income
decreased by 29.5 percent.
The Task Force report has
confirmed this situation and
has recommended that the
government introduce
assistance programs to en-
sure that (Mario farmers
are not disadvantaged
through parochial policies of
other provinces.
Immediate assistance
must be given to farmers on
the verge t bankruptcy. An
emergency interest subsidy
program for Ontario's
farmers' operating emenses
isrequired. If we are to save
our young, aggresive, in-
novative and efficient
fairmers„. we Must subsidire
hgerest rates.
Whge die Minister of
Agricultme, Lorne Hnder-
son, leads as to believe that
only a small number of
farmers are in financial dif-
flatRY and by pbythg the
'Ilirmber game" states that
only one percent of our
farmers are m trouble, the
Task Force reports "the
number of fanners in h-on-
ble is much greater than ad-
mitted by government and
the banks."
I reminded the 'Treasurer,
in the Legislature during
discusSions g the ,Task
Force moat., that last June
he and the Iftenrier met with
a group of farmers from
eau% the province and mo-
ralised them that the govern-
ment had 1199 maim to
than :rl Ifl ithEilr. pro-
blems. Of that, SsZo
has been spent to the
beef industry Its is the
rest of the money?
At the OFA haterm„
