Lions move into second place
The Goderich Lions Pee
Wees moved into second
place in their standings by
defeating Parkhill 5-3 last
Friday and Merton 17-0 on
Saturday.
In Parkhill both teams
found the sticky Ace a
problem • but they still
managed to make it an
exciting game to watch.
Scott Garrow was the op-
portunist for the Lions,
notching three goals and an
assist while Mark Cauchi
and Bill Trebish had single
goals. Shawn Larder and
Trebish had singleassiSts.
The Goderich defence had
their best game of the
season, especially Ryan
Kelly. Parkhill never led in
the game, naming into.a hot
Lion goaltender Jay
Williamson.
Against Ilderton, the Lions
went on a scoring spree and
also plTred well defensively
as goaltender Tom Durnin
recorded a shutout. All three
lines had a piece of the
scoring which was a good
sign for the lions.
The line of Garrow,
Trebish and Byron Bowman
had nine goals with Garrow
getting six, Bowman three
and Trebish five assists.
The line of Shawn Larder,
Mark Cauchi and Steve
Johnston had four goals.
Larder had three and Cauchi
one and Johnston had two
assists.
The line of Darren Stan -
bury, Todd Nurse and David
Brown also scored four with
Stan bury getting two, Brown
and Nurse each one. Mark
Burbine and Tim Wilson
rounded the scoring with
single assists.
The Lions play at home
this Saturday in an
exhibition game with
Listowel.
Students learn curling basics.
Student curlers at GDCI
played the fourth round of
curling matches this week,
with seven different teams
competing in Tuesday af-
ternoon games.
Twenty boys and eight
girls make up the mixed
teams, with all grades being
represented. Their coaches
are science teachers Doug
Bundy and Carl Ziebarth.
Coach Bundy is a certified
Girl Canada instructor and
has been the high school staff
GRHL report
-advisor in curling for the
past nine years.
"We have tried to give the
novice curlers some good
basic instruction,' says
Bundy. "And it is paying off
in the calibre of curling that
the kids are playing."
"Curling is a little dif-
ferent than most of the team
and extracurricular sports
at high school. We don't
restrict the participants to
just the top athletes and we
don't playa Mei games with
teams from the other
schools. We except students
from all the grades, both
boys and girls, and if they.
.are willing to come out for
our instructional clinics and
learn the basics, we put. them
on a team," continues
Bundy.
After three rounds of play
in the first draw, only one
team is undefeated. Dan
Durst, and his team of
Fraser Hayek, Stephanie
Lucas, and Heather
Stapleton, has three wins.
Mile Paquette, who has
Keith Hallam, Bob Rober-
tson, and Carol Ann Smyth
on his team are two and one.
Student curling takes
palce every Tuesday after
school at the Maitland
Carling Club. Try -outs for
the boys and girls teams to
represent the school in
Huron -Perth playoffs started
this week and will continue
over the Christmas holidays.
