good form in 54 win
The Goderich Signal -Star Juveniles split
games last week, losing in St. Marys on
Wednesday 9-4 and beating Oakridge from
London at Medway arena on Sunday 5-1.
After Oakridge scored the opening goal
in Sunday's game, it was all coach Doug,
Cruickshank's boys for the rest of the
game with Dennis Kerr playing solidly in
net.
Rick Anderson tied it up a minute after
Oakridge opened the scoring near the end
of the first period. Alan Bakkler and Jim
Mathers drew assists on the play.
The other four Goderich goals were all
scored in the second period in the space of
five minutes. Bakker scored first from
Darrell Graham, followed by a Graham
goal from Tim Chisholm. Randy Graham
then notched an unassisted goal, with
Mathers getting the final goal from
Darrell Graham with 2:10 left in the germ
for the 5-1 victory.
The Juveniles weren't so effective
against St. Marys the previous Wed-
nesday, however, -as they were dealt a 9-4
loss.
The Signal -Stars kept it close into the
second period, but four St. Marys goals to
Goderich's one during the rest of the game
took it out of reach.,.
Steve Sager got the first goal to tie it at
one each in the first period on a play set up
by Ray Stanton and Graham Salter. Alan
Bakker then tied it at two later in the first
with assistance from Randy Midden and
Kent Tigert.
At the beginning of the second period,
Bakker brought the locals within one of St.
Marys with Tigeit and Larry Kelly
drawing assists. The Juveniles lost their
grip on the game after that as St. Marys
went ahead with four goals.
The other Goderich goal was notched -by
Darrell Graham from Larry Kelly.

for a 2:30 game.
Midgets avenge defeat
with win over Ilderton
BY TD
The Goderich Midgets avenged their
only defeat in Shamrock League hockey
play so far this season when they defeated
Ilderton here Saturday, 7-5.
In an earlier meeting, Merton had
defeated Goderich 3-2. The victory
Saturday gives the Goderich team a
record of four wins, one loss and two ties in
seven league games.
The victory over Merton did not come
easily for coach Larry Jeffrey's Midgets,
however. The game was a rough affair,
bordering on crude at times.
Both teams were chippy and referees
Mark Rowe and Dave WilliScraft did little
to keep the game under control. A total of
99 minutes in penalties were handed out,
with 49 minutes going to the home team;
Goderich jumped off to a 4-0 lead on two
goals by Jeff Feagan and one each by Scott
Stoll and Jeff Sargent before Ilderton hit
the scoresheet. The locals held a 5-2 lead
by the end of the second period. John
Thompson got the fifth Goderich goal on a

llderton outscored Goderich three goals
to two in the third period, but some good
goalteeding by Terry Bean in the Goderich
net preserved the two -goal victory for
Goderich.
Peter Stahl and Paul McCartney not-
ched the Goderich goals in the final frame.
Andy Telford, Keith Hallam and Mark
Crawford were credited with assists.
The Goderich Midgets travel to Lucan
fora game Friday night and then go to
Parkhill Sunday for a 5 p.m. game.

Buchanan from Duncan and Meriam.
A minute into the third period, Dale
Duncan put the Sailors up 4-2 with assists
going to Wayne Rau and Steve Meriam.
But netminder Percy Bedard and his front
men couldn't hold onto the lead, and
Southampton came from behind to tie it.
This Friday, the Sailors play host to the
Mildmay Monarchs at 8:30. Sunday they
travel to Harriston to play the Blues at 2
p.m.
It was a new and improved version of the
Goderich Sailors on the ice last weekend.
With Tom Hill (formerly of the Lucknow
Lancers) behind the bench, the Inter-
mediate C squad defeated Wingham here
Friday night 6-5 in a clean, close game. On
Saturday, they travelled to Southampton
and salvaged a 4-4 tie. Over the two games,
the Sailors drew only seven minor
penalties.
It was a final minute goal on Friday that
won the game against the Royals. The
teams were 5-5 with 18 seconds left on the
clock when Dale Duncan fired a no -assist
effort past Royal goalie HughNichot
The Royals had taken a 3-0 lead in the
first period an the strength of two goals by
Rick 3ackfin, one of than a power play
goal. The Sailors got on the score sheet
with five minutes remainingin the opening
period. It was Paul Kelly getting his rust
of four points for the night from Wayne
Rau, also getting his first of four, and
Graham Hamilton.
The Sailors came out flying in the second
period and scored three goals in the first
ten minutes to take the 4-3 lead.
Wayne Rau scored the first unassisted,
then repeated bis effort an another goal
assisted by Paul Kelly and Jeff Denomme.
Dave Bartliffe then scored at 833 to put
the Sailors ahead on a goal assisted by
Kelly and Denonmie.
But at the 12:31 mark of that period,
Wingham's Blaine McCuthen scored the
equalizer for the Royals to set the stage for
the third period.
It was Wingham that went ahead 5-4 just
past the midway point of the last third on a
shot by Murray Black that beat Sailor
goalie Milos Reynolds. Just two minutes
went by until the Sailors' Wayne Rau got
his hat trick goal from Steve Meriam and
Paul Kelly to tie up the game at five aside.
Then with less than hall a minute left,
Duncan scored the winner for Goderich,
perhaps marking the turning point in the
season for the Sailors.

Northern.

GDCI coach Lynn Meyers felt his team'
came up flat in their game with Northern.
"Whether it was the pressure of the game
or the two and a half week layoff we had, I
don't know," said Meyers, "bit we did not
play welt at all."
.The Vikings had used a full court press
effectively in whining the Huron -Perth
title, but it cid not work against Northern.
The Goderidi girls were also guilty of
either rushing their shots or hesitating too
long on alternate occasions.
The Vikings did manage to put on a spurt
which cut Northern's lead to only one
point, but Sarnia pulled ahead again to
stay.
Allison Graham scored 14 points, most of
them in the second half, for Goderich. Kim
Fritzley and Cathy Oke had four apiece
