HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1981-12-02, Page 46Symphony series offered by Rotary Cultural winter events abound in Goderich Cultural events are more in evidence in the Goderich area during the winter months and one of the highlights of the season is the appearances of Orchestra London Canada. Formerly known as the London Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra London Canada is beginning the 1981.62 season with a new sound under the talented direction of Alexis Hauser. The orchestra was established in 1937 and became fully professional in 1975 when St/dolga, the 25 - member core of the or- chestra was formed. The full-time core regularly performs in London and •surrounding communities between September and May. With the addition of part- time players, Orchestra London performs a variety of series in London that include a Symphony Series, Pop Series, Lollipops and other special events. The 1981.82 season brings a special treat for audiences. Through the generosity of the duMaurier Council for the Performing Arts, talented young Canadian artists will make their debut with Orchestra London Canada in several per- formances. The series will introduce pianist, John Hendrickson, classical Winter is good time for art lovers.. For many, the snows of winter don't signal an end to activities and leisure pur- suits but, rather, mark the beginning of new endeavors. ART EXHIBITIONS For the art lover there are numerous exhibitions throughout the province and some rather interesting displays near this area The Gallery in Stratford is now featuring Dutch 17th Century prints, carpets from Stratford homes, paintings and prints from permanent collections and cigar box�tpropp ll designs The showi rim until January! 33,, 1982. From February 12 to March 14 the Gallery will feature the Huron -Perth Open Exhibition providing local artists with a showing of their fine work Comic Art will also be displayed in that Theperid. aUniversity `of Guelph Art Gallery is located on Gordon Street and is currently naming the Ivan Eyre Exposition until January 10, 1982, From January 16 to February 4 the gallery features The Com- fortable Art and Spinning and Weaving in Canada. The Arts Centre Gallery at the University of Waterloo will be featuring paintings and drawingsfrom the Benmill,er offers a good outing If you're looking for a gaud cross country ski ... outing there are well- grommed trails and some of the most picturesque scenery in the Benmiller area. The Benmiler Inn has been upgrading miles of cross crounty trails over the past few years and they are in top form. The Inn offers weekend ski packages including meals and use of the trails. But the trails are also for public use and while there is no charge, cross country skiers are en- couraged to warns up by the fire and enjoy lunch or tea after an outing. Just down the road from the Inn. Cherrydale Farm also offers ex- cellent cross country skiing facilities and riding stables. Cherrydale Farm also features riding stables that open year round. The stables opened this summdrand have been a popular feature. Seven horses are available at S9 perhour and trails are also well marked. Ontario Art Gallery during December. The Cultural Centre in Chatham on William Street will present Cycles and. Heide Art from the University of British Columbia to December 27. Open Studio will be featured from February 18 -March 14. The Kitchener -Waterloo Art Gallery at the Centre in the Square is presenting Viewpoint: Twenty-nine by Nine and Anne Savage, Her Expression of Beauty ariil December 13. From December 17 to January 31, John Hofstetter and Karen Fletcher have displays and Jan, 7-31 is the Daily Smile, cartoons by Duncan Ferguson. The Tom Thompson Memorial Mt Gallery in Owen Sound is now showing Artist's Choice untilJanuary 3. January830 is a showing by Charles Pachter and during the month of February works by students at Georgian College wall be featured by the gallery. guitarist, Norbert Kraft, violinist Laurence Leydier, pianist Peter Allen, violinist Eduard Minevlch, singer Paul Massel and vocal duet Brenda Berge and Blair House. Under the sponsorship of the Goderich Rotary Club and the financial assistance of the Sully foundation, Orchestra London Canada will put on three per- formances in Goderich. The season opens Monday, December 21 in the GDCI auditorium with Milton Barnes conducting the or- chestra in a rousing family Christmas show complete with a sing -along of carols. Erllka Goodman will perform on the harp. Alexis Hauser will conduct the Sinfonia on Saturday, February 6 at North Street United Church. Mr Hauser, born in Vienna in 1947, is one of the world's most exciting young conductors. Eighteen - year old violincellist, Desmond Hoebig wall per- form withSinfonia. The final performance of the season will see Eric Knight conducting the full Orchestra on Sunday, April 3 in the high school auditorium. Mr. Knight is one of the most sought after Pops conductors in North America and worked closely with Arthur Fiedler for ten years. The second half of the April 3 concert will feature a tribute to Fiedler with arrangements Knight did for the Boston Pops.
