Skiing may be compared
to riding a blcycel, you never
really forget how.
While some skiers may
experience early season
jitters the first day on the hill
while attempting the first
run, the ability to ski is still
there.
However, there are thin::
you can do to eliminate those
jitters and make the first
outing a comfortable one.
Before heading for the
slopes, put on your equip-
ment at home.
Test the boots, skis and
poles at home or outside and
be sure the bindings have
been checked and readjusted
by a certified ski shop
mechanic.
Lorne McFadgen, director
of skiing at Talisman, claims
SKI SCENE
that the simple act of putting
on your equipment and
moving around a bit will give
you the feel of skiing,
allowing your muscles to
remember the weight. The
next step is your first day on
snow.
On the first outing, choose
a slope that is much more
gentle than your regular
choice and be sure to warm
up prior to the run.
Perform a series of
stretching and movement
exercises using your
equipment as part of the
exercise, 17o not use a
bouncing motion when
Ontario offers
many winter
ski. events
The sporting scene
flourishes with activity
during the winter months
and several tournaments
and exhibitions are
scheduled throughout - the
province.
One of the most popular
winter sports is skiiing and a
number of alpine events and
competitions are held in the
area. The Pepsi Cola Family
challenge will be held at Blue
Mountain in Collingwood on
January 23 and will move to
the Talisman resort in
Kimberley, February 20.
• Collingwood will also host
the Canadine Juvenile Ski
championship from
February 28 to March 7 at
Craigleith and Osler°Bluffs
Ski Clubs.
Molstar Alpine Events are
held continuously at most
resorts in the province
beginning in Kimberley
January 2 at the Talisman
Resort and January 2 at the
Beaver Valley Ski Club. The
ski challenge will: also be
held at the Chicopee Ski Club
in Kitchener January J,
For cross country ski
enthusiasts, the nearest
competition is in Cambridge

stretch movements.
Stand with your skis a few
feet apart, your poles held
across the body and stret-

Touch your poles to your skis
and hold it.
Again with your poles held
over your head, twist your
torso from side to side-, first
to the left, hold it, and then to
the right and hold.
Now with your poles
behind your shoulders and
your arms arms hanging
over them repeat the same
stretch.
For a different movement,
hold your poles int eh usual
manner and use them for
support by your sides. With
your feet together, slide one
ski forward and kick it up to
rest in front of its tail. Slowly
flex your torso, bringing
your head toward your knee,
hold. Repeat with the other
ski and leg.
Here's another. With your
feet together and using your
poles for support, flexyour
legs and move your knees
rapidly in a circular motion
