HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1981-12-02, Page 37Snowmobile Show Friday at Hully Gully Area snowmobilers and sports enthusiasts will be pleased to learn that the 1981 rendition of the Western Ontario Snowmobile Show will be staged in Huron County. The Snow Show, sponsored by Yamaha Motor Canada Ltd., will be hosted by Hully Gully Snowmobile Club and will take place in the recreation complex near Varna The snowmobile show begins Friday, December 4 at 6 p.m. and continues through Sunday. The show offers a myriad of activities for the snomobile enthusiast and the itinerary includes displays by the O.F.S.C. and P.T.B.A., representing the trails and clubs across the province. The show will feature a snowmoblle theatre with continous movies on safety, trail riding and raring. The racing segments will feature Eagle Run a nd the Ka wartha Cup. The holiday in winter section will be presented by northern resorts who will be offering special weekend packages. Practical demonstrations have been worked into the show as clinics on per - Area trails If . snowrobilers are looking for groomed trails and exciting 'riding rather then fields and bade roads, there are days of fun ex- ploring the Huron and Bruce County area. At Concession 2 and 3 of Culross Township between Wingham and Teeswater, there are about 25 kilometers of groomed trails which are maintained by a Bruce County program of the Ministry of Natural Resources. These trails are accessible from Highway 4. South of Goderich near Varna is Hully Gully recreation park. With 40 . kilometers of trails and rentals that can be used on or off the park property, Hully Gully has something for everyone. Winter camping and a refreshment shelter are among other attractions of this sports facility. The Conservation Areas in the Exeter district each provide trails • for snowmobiling, the largest of which ae up to 3+8 km through the Hay Swamp. The Hay Swamp is' a re forested area but the trails are built on old logging trails through the well -sheltered area. Because the Hay Swamp is a low-lying, tree -covered area, it had the distinct advantage of being able to hold snow late into the spring, • . Six clubs form the Lake Huron Snowmobile Ass. While still in its infancy, the Lake Huron Regional Snowmobile Associationhas made great strides in co- ordinating snowmobiling activity in the Huron County area. Formed in December, 1980 the Assocation boasts a membership of six snowmobile clubs and an affiliate member, The clubs include Auburn, Blyth, Clinton, Colborne Township, Pine Ridge and St. Helens. Hully Gully is the affiliate member. Association secretary, Ken Wilson, said the Association was formed to foster co- operation between individual clubs and link individual trail systems. Most clubs had established trails and the system is now linked, offering dose to 300 miles of trails, although, not all are marked. The colborne Club will be marking a trail from Goderich to Auburn this year and it will be maintained if notabused. During the snowmobile season, individual clubs offer cookouts, family rides, a monthly breakfast, poker rallies and organization and participation in the Forester Snowmobile-a-thon to raise money for cancer research, The Association has also reached a reciprocal agreement with Bruce County regarding use of trails. The Lake Huron Regional Snowmobile Association has been successful in linking area traits due to the co- operation of farmers and landowners. Without their permission, Wilson ex- plained, the trail system would not have been linked.
