Area trails
If . snowrobilers are
looking for groomed trails
and exciting 'riding rather
then fields and bade roads,
there are days of fun ex-
ploring the Huron and Bruce
County area.
At Concession 2 and 3 of
Culross Township between
Wingham and Teeswater,
there are about 25 kilometers
of groomed trails which are
maintained by a Bruce
County program of the
Ministry of Natural
Resources. These trails are
accessible from Highway 4.
South of Goderich near
Varna is Hully Gully
recreation park. With 40
. kilometers of trails and
rentals that can be used on or
off the park property, Hully
Gully has something for
everyone. Winter camping
and a refreshment shelter
are among other attractions
of this sports facility.
The Conservation Areas in
the Exeter district each
provide trails • for
snowmobiling, the largest of
which ae up to 3+8 km through
the Hay Swamp. The Hay
Swamp is' a re forested area
but the trails are built on old
logging trails through the
well -sheltered area.
Because the Hay Swamp is
a low-lying, tree -covered
area, it had the distinct
advantage of being able to
hold snow late into the
spring, • .
Six clubs form
the Lake Huron
Snowmobile Ass.
While still in its infancy,
the Lake Huron Regional
Snowmobile Associationhas
made great strides in co-
ordinating snowmobiling
activity in the Huron County
area.
Formed in December, 1980
the Assocation boasts a
membership of six
snowmobile clubs and an
affiliate member, The clubs
include Auburn, Blyth,
Clinton, Colborne Township,
Pine Ridge and St. Helens.
Hully Gully is the affiliate
member.
Association secretary, Ken
Wilson, said the Association
was formed to foster co-
operation between individual
clubs and link individual
trail systems.
Most clubs had established
trails and the system is now
linked, offering dose to 300
miles of trails, although, not
all are marked. The colborne
Club will be marking a trail
from Goderich to Auburn
this year and it will be
maintained if notabused.
During the snowmobile
season, individual clubs
offer cookouts, family rides,
a monthly breakfast, poker
rallies and organization and
participation in the Forester
Snowmobile-a-thon to raise
money for cancer research,
The Association has also
reached a reciprocal
agreement with Bruce
County regarding use of
trails.
The Lake Huron Regional
Snowmobile Association has
been successful in linking
area traits due to the co-
operation of farmers and
landowners. Without their
permission, Wilson ex-
plained, the trail system
would not have been linked.
The Association and
member clubs offer
numerous snowmobiling
outings and activities and for
