'Big End' vs 'Big Bucks'
The third week of
Industrial Curling was a bad
week for the educators of
Huron County. In the first of
three educational en-
counters, it was 'Big End'
Budnark against 'Big Bucks'
Moore.
This game was perhaps
the best of the evening as the
Elementary Teachers and
the Lady Foresters went into
the final end tied at five
points apiece. Teacher Mary
Lu Tayor's great form
highlighted the strong
teacher effort but the 'lucky'
Lady Foresters were not to
be denied their jackpot.
Curling . like a . thousand
dollars, Bernice Moore took
three in the final end to win
by a field goal- just as
Edmonton beat Ottawa to
win theGrey Cup.
Jerry Riseborough and his
Sifto Salt maniac teammates
must have thought that they
were headed toward their
third loss of the year against
the GDCI Teacher . No.1
team. The teachers certainly
did! '
Behind the fine curling of
Bill Worsell and Carl
Ziebarth, the educators built
up a five point lead after six
ends. Unfortunately for
them, a game of curling.
consists of eight ends.
A glorious double raise
take-out by Jerry
Riseborough in the seventh
end resulted in "a big four
point count and a closer
game. Eighth end heroics by
Don Scott and Tim Colwell
plus a 'spit the bit'' shot by
teacher George Sutton
resulted in another three
points and a great come
froln behind victory for the
Maniacs.
In a rare show of empathy
the GDCI Teacher Not team
tried to cheer up their
dejectd cohorts by allowing
the Foresters to humiliate
them 15-1.
It didn't work bit it cer-
tainly made some members
of .the V&G team happy.
Chris 'sacrifica1 lamb'
Connor was given the
unenviable task of defeating
the powerful Foresters led
by the difficult to describe
Cam Bogie. After the match,
the teachers complained of
marking fatigue while Mr.
Bogie contemplated running
for theBoard of Education.
Fortunately, the other half
of the educational spectrum.
the students did not follow in
their teachers' footsteps.
"Why," they ask, "should we
start to pay attention to them
now? We never have
before."
Del Mitchelmore \ was
particularly sharp for the
GDCI Vikings bit it was left
to Mike Paquette to add the
spark needed for victory
over a tough Champion Sales
Office foursome.
Shots such as a double
take-out by Pete, Wanner in
the fourth end were
responsible for a tie game
after five ends but the youth
and skill of the Vikings put
the game away with two in
the sixth and another two in
the seventh. They recorded a
9-3 victory.
Champion's other
representatives experienced
the same fate as the
Salesman as both Local 1863
and the Silver Brooms lost
their contests.
The Huron Health Unit led
by Laurie Paquette,jumped
into a quick three point lead
in the early going .of their
match against 1863 and
never looked back. Strong
efforts by Shirley Fisher,
Jack MacKinnon and
demoted John Orr combined
to keep the strong union
foursome off-balance all
night.
Charlie Crawford gave a
spirited performance but
this game belonged to Huron
County's healthy ones all the
way. Final score was 7-4.
The Champion Office
Silver Brooms ran into a
nasty collection of Maitland
Lady Golfers and surren-
dered an 11-1 contest. Lead
for the ladies was Edwina
Brissette who curled
flawlessly all night.
Victoria & Grey scored
five times as many points
this week as last. That's the
good news. The bad news is
that their opponents scored
twice as many points as they
did.
The mother and son team
of Phyllis and Bill Durst
were outstanding for the
victorious Durst Builders as
they rarely allowed a game
V&G unit a chance to get
going. Oldtimer Fran Fisher
and her boss Guy Kelly
curled strong games for the
losers.
The grudge match of the
night pitted the two AM&G
Hospital teams against one
another. In a no -holds -
barred type.of battle the two
defenders of the sick put
down their instruments of
healing and picked up rocks
and sticks and got down to it.
It took a triple take-out in
the final end by 'GC' skip
Ron `I want your blood'
Klages to secure the victory
for the AM&G 'GCs'. A
valiant comeback ,effort led
by Elmer Taylor went the
way of house calls with that
last Klages shot.
Nevertheless, the never
say die attitude that one
would hope our medical
people would have showed
through and foreshadows
another close game later in
the season.

The Goderich Lions Fee
Wees had a successful week
by defeating Listowel 8-4 in
exhibition play and a most
improved Exeter team 4-2 in
league play. After these two
games, the Lions' record
stands at nine wins and three
losses.
In the Listowel game,
Goderich was in the penalty
box often, getting eight of the
11 infractions. Scott Garrow
had three goals and one
assist, and Shawn Larder
had two goals and one assist
to lead the offence.
Other point getters were
Bill Treblsh with one goal
and two assists, Steve
Johnston with one goal and
one assist, Todd Nurse had a
goal, and Mark Cauchi and
Mark Burbine had an assist
each. A bright. spot in this
game was the play of the five
defeneemen as they continue
their fine. improv ement.
At home Saturday against
Edge Exeter 3®2
Exeter, the locals fell behind
2-0 by the end of the first
period but rallied for three
unanswered goals in the

The turning point in the
me came In the third
period when, with two men
short for three minutes,
Shawn Larder, Ryan Kelly,
Mark Burbine, and goalie
Tom Durnin kept Exeter
from scoring and shortly
after, the Lions made it 4-2.
The Lions travel to
Parkhill this Friday and then
back home Saturday against
Bderton in league play.
Atoms have best showing
The Goderich Machinist
Atoms defeated the Exeter
Atoms here on Saturday by a
score of 3-2 during Shamrock
League play. But the score
was not a true reflection of
how well the local boys
played. Coach Steve
Buchanan said he felt it was
their best game of the season
so far. They hustled and kept
the play in Exeter's end most
of the game but had some
difficulty getting their shots
to actually go in the net.
Exeter opened the scoring
33 seconds into the game but
Goderich tied things up a few
minutes later with a goal by
Greg, Alcock on an assist
from Gregg De Winter. Two
minutes later Goderich went
ahead on a goal by Jeff
Boyce with an assist from De
Winter and Alcock..
Goderich scored the one
and only goal in the second
period to go ahead by two..
Andre Cauchi put it in the net
with an assist from De
Winter and Alcock again.
Exeter scored a goal at the
13 minute mark of the third
period but Goderich hung on
for the remaining two
minutes to clinch the game.
Justin Feagan played a
fine game in net for
Godeiich.
The Goderich Machinist
Atoms standings to date are:
five wins, three losses and
one tie.
They will travel to Parkhill
on Friday night for a game
at 7:15 p.m. On Saturday
they will play Ilderton at
home at 4 p.m.
