BUCHANAN
It was a proud moment
Friday afternoon for the 16 -
member Antique Champion
Club when they presented
their first completed project-
-a fully restored 1939
Champion hydraulic grader-
-to Bruce Sully, chairman
and chief executive officer of
the Champion Group of
Companies.
The Antique Champion
Club was formed in October
of 1980 by a group of
Champion employees in-
terested in working on and
restoring old graders in their
spare time with co-operation
from the company. Their
ultimate goal, says club
president Wayne Kennedy, is
to have one grader,
representing each era In the
company's history, restored
by 1986, the year d Cham-
pion's 100th birthday.
Graders restored by the
club will be used in parades
and put on display at trade
shows, etc.
The club began working on
the 1939 hydraulic grader on
January 21 of this year and
more than 1,000 man-hours
went into Its restoration. It is
actually a 1 c : model built
by Champion in 1939 and it
represents the first
hydraulic grader ever built
in Canada, The Township of
East Wawanosh purchased
the grader from Champion In
May 1939 for $3,550. It
worked until mid -1960 and
was traded in on a windrow
eliminator for a later model
in 1966. The Antique Club
acquired it in 1980.,.
The grader was refur-
bished with old parts along
with a muffler donated by
George Wraith and glass for
the windows donated by
Fisher Glass.
"It brings back a lot ° of
fond memories," says Sully
who explains that it was the
first grader he ever assessed
as a salesman in 1947. He
remembers that it sprayed
grease all over his one and
only suit when he was in-
specting it at that time.
The newly restored bright
orange grader, now in
perfect working order again,
made its community debut in
Goderich's Santa Claus
parade Saturday.
Bill Helesic (left), inspector for quality assurance and Kip
White ( right), manager of service technical support are two
members of the Antique Champion Club who helped restore
this 1939 hydraulic grader. After presenting the grader on
Friday to Bruce Sully, chairman and chief executive officer
of C i , pion, they took him for a ride to demonstrate that it
was in perfect working order. The Club has two more old
graders lined up now for restoration. (Photo by Joanne
