Dear Editor: I wish to respond to an ar- ticle in the November 26th, 1981 edition of your newspaper entitled 'Panel Raps Maintenance Work." The source of this informa- tion is from a report of the Public Institutions In- spection Panel. The com- ment they made regarding the Alexandra Marine and General Hospital is as follows: "New floor ex- cellent. Panel realized that some renovations were be- ing' made but general maintenance didn't seem adequate. Kitchen area poor, wax build-up on aisles, storage area untidy." The Panel is composed of six area citizens who are given the task each year of inspecting facilities within the County of Huron where provincial funding is provid- ed for their operation. These members appear to be selected at random and are provided with very little guidance or instruction as to their duties and respon- sibilities. Their own personal background and training may be completely different from what they are expected to review in the various in- stitutions. A much more reliable assessment of Health Care Facilities is provided by the Canadian Council on Hospital Accreditation. I wish to quote directly from the July 9th, 1981 findings of that Committee. "The Executive Housekeeper is commended on the excellent janitorial service." This Accreditation Report is in direct contrast with the findings of the Inspection Panel. It is unfortunate that a few people can make com- ments, without prior discus- sion, that affect people endeavouring to provide an excellent service to the peo- ple of this community. Yours sincerely, E. W. Taylor, Administrator One sided Dear Editor: For over a year now Adrian Vos has been writing his one-sided articles about the pork industry in Ontario and Canada. He has also been commenting regularly on the opinions and in- telligence of those who hold different views. I recall he is the one who said "Squealing is the privilege of the weak." There is hardly any farm publication that doesn't have some of his "squealing" in it. In the November 17th issue of Farm & Country Adrian states in his "Wait For Market Facts" that Del O'Brien, Lorne Henderson, and myself should wait until we have all the facts before we form opinions on what is good for the future of the pork industry. I suggest he practice what he preaches. The HCPPA chairman had agreed to 'hold an informa- tion meeting to discussthe pros and cons of supply management and have a vote of producers to see if they wanted to pursue supp- ly management or not. The general meeting was scheduled for the end of Ju- ly. Then at an executive meeting. Adrian Vos per- suaded them to reverse the decision to hold a vote. What was Adrian afraid of? Did he want to wait for the BOWMAN marketing research report? If so, then why did the HCPPA ex- ecutive send a letter to the Bruce County Association stating that only 10 percent of Huron's pork producers were interested in supply management? On what facts was this figure based? There are none. Next, recommendations were sent to Dr. Gordon Bowman's market research committee that clearly stated that HCPPA were against any type of supply management in the pork in- dustry. On what facts were these recommendations bas- ed? Both these things were done before pork producers have had a look at the Bowman report. POWER TEAM Aver pork producers want a small number of men making these decisions for them without first having a vote? It seems strange that others were supposed to "Wait For Market Facts" while Adrian wages his per- sonal brain washing cam- paign on Ontario pork pro- ducers. I know Adrian is aspiring to be a full time writer. Maybe he could write about other things. Perhaps he should . stick to a comic strip featuring Arnold the Pig or Miss Piggy. Andre J: Durand,. RR2 Zurich Need change Dear Editor To the people of Goderich; that you may understand. Today another miner was killed in the salt mine. My God, where is it going to end? A young man, a family man died in another mine accident. This man died working on the same shift with the same men that worked with Steve Palmer three weeks ago. My husband is on that shift this week. I'm afraid to answer my door to strangers or to an- swer the telephone for fear it is them telling me my husband is a victim. A year ago last May, the miners walked out in protest against the working con. dations. After seven days they returned to work when promised things would change. GODERICH SIGN STAR, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 2,1001 --PAGE 5 ® nitorial j ob Last April, the miners went out on a legal strike when they falled to settle, a new contract. Like many families, we suffered financially because of a long strike which didn't end until the end of June. The miners had been of- fered a substantial pay in- crease and were expected to accept the offer. The strike didn't end until health and safety features were in- cluded in the new contract. Many people in this town and outside talked about how stupid men were these days to walk off a job and go on strike. They should be thank- ful they even have a job and a good wage coming in in this day and age. So let's look at some particulars. Three days before the last contract ran out, two men were seriously injured when a cave-in oc- cured. Another man died three weeks ago and today another has died for what reason? After the accident today the men had the, option to go home if they wanted to. They all left. There should never have been any questions as to whether they go home or not. The doors should have been closed. As they should have been closed with the .artier death. Grown men were crying openly. My heart aches, my tears flow and my prayers are with all the wives whose husbands work in the mine., Sincerely, Gail Purser R.N.
