Panel raps maintenance work
A six -member Public Institutions Inspection Panel
submitted a report before County Court Judge F.G.
Carter on November 16 following itsinspection of
various county facilities.
The panel of jurors, under the chairmanship of
William Kinahan, made the submission to Judge
Carter after the jurors had inspected nine public
institutions, including three in the immediate area.
The panel of jurors included chairman Kinahan,
Bannon Sandra Lee, Victor Hartman, William
MacPherson, Lorne Preszcator and Alvin Taylor.
The panel inspected the Goderich Detachment of the
Ontario Provincial Police, Bluewater Centre for the
Developmentally Handicapped and Alexandra
Marine and General Hospital in the immediate area
and also the Wingham Day Care Centre, Silver Circle
School, Golden Circle School, Clinton Community
Centre, South Huron Hospital. and Arc Industries
Group Home.
Generally the panel found the premises in good
condition but the housekeeping and maintenance
duties at Alexandra Marine and General Hospital
were mentioned. In their report to Judge Carter, the
panel said that while renovations are being made at
the hospital, general maintenance did not seem
adequate, the kitchen area was poor and the storage.
area untidy.
The panel reported that the Goderich detachment
of the OPP was a bright and clean facility and no
recommendations were offered. During the tour of
the Bluewater Centre, the panel was treated to a meal
and indicated that the rapport between residents and
staff was excellent.
Most other facilities on the list of inspection were
reported to be in good or satisfactory shape.
A panel is selected each year .and a list of public
institutions is inspected. In recommendations sub-
mitted before the court, the panel said additional
information is required prior to the inspection
process.
Waste disposal site ti,up4atihle
Huron County's prime agricultural land and rural
community are incompatible with a large scale toxic
waste disposal site, according to the Huron County
. Federation of Agriculture's president, Gerry For-
tune. Huron County's Ashfield Township or a location
in the south end of the' county have been mentioned as
possible alternatives for the now rejected South
Cayuga site.
At the Huron County Federation of Agriculture
meeting in, Clinton, November 19 the directors
unanimously agreed the site for -.such a plant should
be centrally located, as close as possible to the major
• areas of waste • production e.g. Windsor -Sarnia and
Hamilton -Toronto to minimize transportation routes
which would be used, both road. and rail, to minimize
road upgrading and transportation .costs; that it
should conform to all the criteria for selection of can-
didate regions set out in the MacLaren report to the
Ministry of the Environment, August 1979; and that
full environmental assessment.hearinls must be held
Aux. Meets
The Huronview auxiliary
met in the board room at
Huronview on Nov. 16 when
Mrs. Leona Lockhart Opened
the meeting.
The minutes of the last
meeting were read by the
secretary, Mrs. J. Griffiths, •
and the roll call was
answered by 12 members
and two visitors who later
joined the auxiliary.
Mrs. Marion Powell gave
the treasurer's report and it
was decided a cheque for
$100 go to the .hospital
building fund.
It is suggested to see about
getting a directory so
visitors could look at it to
locate their friends when
they visit at Huronview.
Tickets were given out by
Mrs. Mabel McAdam for
members to sell on a violet
quilt. The draw is to be made
at the Blossom Tea in June.
Wins $1,000
Bernice Moore of RR 4,
Goderich won the $1,000
grand prize in the Clinton
Lions Club annual Grey Cup
draw last Sunday. Her winn-
ing ticket was 23 East, 26
West.
Taking home the third-
quarter prize of $300 was Col-
leen Phillips of Clinton,
while Wayne Layton of the
Clinton area won the half-
time prize of $200, and John
Harkes of Toronto won the
first-quarter prize of $100.
"Red" Garon of the club
sold the top three tickets and
to ensure public participation and safetyt .. ,
• The directors • noted ;that according to • the
MacLaren report, Huron County 'is one' of the few
counties in Southwestern Ontario with no sources of
toxic liquid wastes.
The Huron Federation has been following the
development of the site selection process . since the •
need was first announced over a• year ago. In
December 1980 they sent aletter to •the current
Minister of Environment, Dr. Parrot, asking for in •
-
formation on the procedures used to select disposal
sites arid the studies of the actual sites in Ontario. The.
Ministry never responded to the Federation's re-
quest. No information was ever received. •
Jim McIntosh, second vice-president, summarized
the discussion by saying, "We produce and sell beef,
pork, poultry, milk and eggs into the'tirban areas and
• don't ask them to take our waste products (manure).
Why' should we have. to take their wastes out in the
country?"
Town to get new doctors
During 1982, • two new general prac-
titioners will be moving to Goderich. One
of the physicians is taking a course in
anaesthesia and this will assist with the
shortage experienced in the past in this
area.
Concern has been expressed however
about the impact that these new.
physicians will have on beds and services
such as laboratory, x-ray and
physiotherapy at the hospital.
While it is recognized that additional
physicians are needed here, they will
tend to increase the demand for services
within the hospital and therefore extra
costs which must be absorbed within the
budget.
To buy rnonjtor
The hospital hoard has substituted
$2,000 worth of new items for $5,000 worth
of approved items on its equipment list. A
new freezer and snowblower will be
passed up this year in favor of hand
-railings for second floor west at a cost of
$700 and a surveillance camera and
monitor for the emergency department
ata cost of $1,200.

BRIEFS
Ambulance budget
An ambulance budget of $174,000 will
be presented from AM&G to the
Ambulance Services Branch. Approval
for $169,000 has been received from the
Ministry of Health and the hospital board
is hoping the Ambulance Services
Branch will make up the $5,000 dif-
ference.
Khan to Scotland
Dr. S. Khan, Ph.D, will present a paper
on hypnosis at an international seminar
in Scotland this year. The hospital board
has agreed to pay his registration fee and
will look at his travelling expenses
separately in next year's budget.
