Riddell says this area won't be chosen as waste site
By Jh n Fitzgerald
Although people in Huron and Bruce Counties are
worried there holy be a industrial waste facility in
either of the two counties, Huron4Mlddlesex Member
of the Provincial Parliament Jack Riddell (Liberal)
said this week there is little likelihood the facility will
come here.
A study conducted in 1900 by the Ontario Waste
Management Corporation recommended a location in
Ashfield Township, near Lochalahlas the best choice
for such a facllity, but South Cayuga was chosen for
further study because of its superior accessibility.
Another site east of Port Elgin was also high on the
list.
But people in Huron and Bruce are worried the f„
dump site might come here after the Waste Manage-
ment Corp rejected the South Cayuga site last week
and are ready to take a lesson frorp the Haldimand-
Norfolk people and organize to fight any liquid in-
dustrial waste facility in the area.
Murray Elston, Liberal MPP for Huron -Bruce, said
in an interview on Monday he has heard from many
of his constituents since that announcement last
week, but Mr. Riddell says that now the government
will have to reaezamine all the criteria for selecting
sites and he's confident Huron or Bruce won't be on
the new list.
Corporation president Dr. Donald Chant said last
week the search for a new site would begin quickly,
with the criteria used to,evaluate sites in the previous
study to be emamined.
But neither he nor Environemnt Minister Keith
Norton would speculate on the 17 other sites studied
and rated last year.
"As far as I'm concerned they (the ministry) don't
even follow their own guidelines and follow the pro-
per procedure for environmental review hearings, "
Mr. Riddell said in reference to the South Cayuga site
where the government announced the selection of the
site without calling for input first. Subsequently, a
large protest group was organized, leading up to the.
government's change of mind last week.
Cost for ICU increased
. A revised estimated cost for the ICU
project has been given as $553,520. -an
increase of approximately $53,000 over
the previous estimate. This estimate
includes architect fees and has increased
due to inflation and the addition of such
extras as isolated cubicles and individual
washroom facilities.
ICU fund raising chairman, Bob
Dempsey, says a statement will be issued
to the media by the end of the year to tell
the public exactly what the extra funds
collected in the campaign will be used
for.
To buy plaque
The hospital board has approved an
expenditure of approximately $800 for a
bronze plaque to be put in the new
psychiatric unit and dedicated by Health
Minister Dennis Timbrell when he of-
ficially opens the unit February 5.
Before the expenditure is made though,
the board will contact the architect and
the contractor to see if they are willing to
donate such a plaque.
Profit realized
A total profit of ,739.60 was realized
by the hospital at its auction sale of
surplus furniture at • Suncoast Mall
October 31vThefurniture accumulated in
the move of the psychiatric unit from the
Bluewater Centre to new quarters at
AM&G,
Investigate program
The hospital board has been. informed
that University Hospital in London will
no longer be able to provide Bio -Medical
Engineering Services wider the Shared
Services Program. The board is
therefore investigating joining the filo-
Medical Engineering Shared Services
Program in Toronto. For an expenditure
of approximately $5,000 per year, this
service offers a contract of preventative
maintenance on all medical equipment
two or three times a year with
emergencies costing extra.
Separate service contracts on each
piece of equipment would cost ap-
proximatley $20,000 to $25,060 per year.
HOSPITAL
BRIEFS
Budget deficit
Hospital administrator Elmer Taylor
has informed the board that a total
budget deficit of $100,000,000 is projected
for hospitals across ° the province this
year. He said that AM&G was ap-
proximately $21,000 over budget as of
October and that the finance committee
would be looking attwo options: cutting
expenditures or more cash flow from the
Ministry of Health.
To write MOH
The chairman of the management"
committee has been directed to write a
letter to Huron County's Medical Officer
of Health inviting him to a meeting to
discuss application for a Chronic Home
Care Program here.
Ginn doesn't accept
A letter has been sent to Health
Minister Dennis Timbrell informing him
that Gerry Ginn is ' unable to accept,
reappointment as the provincial
representative on the AM&G hospital
hoard due tti what he feels is his lack of
time to devote to the appointment.
Smoking policy
The Medical Advisory Committee has
recommended that the hospital smoking
policy be more actively enforced and that
the doctors' lounge in the emergency
department be non-smoking and that
smoking be allowed in the emergency
waiting room.

A large group of people are ready to set up a
similar organization in Hurons -Bruce 11 they find their
area is being studied for a site, said Mr. Elston.
He maid cottage owners are concerned about "foes
of their cottage land values" and residents
throughout his riding fear environmental damage
from such a facility.
Mr. Elston is seeking meetings with Dr. Chant and
Mr. Norton to obtain more information about the
search for a new site.
In the legislature on Monday, Mr. Norton rejected a
suggestion by Brian Charlton (NDP -Hamilton Moun-
tain) to hold a full-scale environmental assessment
when the next site is located.
The public hearings held by the Ontario Waste
Management Corp before rejecting South Cayuga did
the job, said Mr. Norton, and that procedure. can
work again. He also rejected Mr. Charlton's sugges-
tion that four or five possible sites be studied rather,
than one, so that alternatives would be available if
the first choke is again rejected.
