Maggie and Pierre returning to Blyth
There will be something
old and something new when
the smash Crit 'Maggie and
Pierre' returns to the Blyth
Centre for the Arts for two
days only, Saturday night,
November 28 and Sunday
afternoon, November 29.
When 'Maggie and Pierre'
played the Centre last April,
it set an all-time box office
record for winter
programming, selling out
the original three per-
formances and nearly selling
out a fourth performance
hastily arranged at the last
moment. Now, as part of an
Ontario tour, the Theatre
Passe Muraille production is
returning with a new look.

Growing houseplants
and rattif'ci$l light opens a
new :world of. gardening for
hobbyists, says Bob Flexr
ing, Ontario Ministry . of
Agriculture and Food hoc
Although artificial light is
no thatch -for - natural
sunlight, any common
houseplant will grow suc-
cessfully with 14 to 16 hours
of artificial light daily.
For light gardens, Flem-
ing
leuring recommends fluorescent
lamps instead of conven-
tional incandescent bulbs.
Fluorescent lamps are more
economical because . they
provide more illumination
per watt of electricity used.
Most fluorescent lamps
provide a good spectrum of
light and are also cooler than
incandescent bulbs. There is
a variety of fluorescent
lampsdesigned for plant
growing. However, cool,
light white tubes are
satisfactory for most home
gardeners, says Fleming.
"The better-known
houseplants, such as
philodendrons, African
violets, German ivy,
begonias, pothos and scin-
dapus will grow well under
artificial light," he say -
Lights should be set about
0.3 m (one foot) directly
above the plants for max-
imum light. Raise the light
as plants grow in height.

over the role that Linda
Griffiths originated, playing
Margaret • Trudeau, Pierre -
Trudeau and - Henry, the
reporter who watches the
pair as their romance
blossoms, then crumbles.
When Miss Griffiths ap-
peared in Blyth, she was
premiering the two -person
version of the play that
eventually went to New York
where Eric Peterson took
Patrick Brymer''s role as
Henry the reporter. Miss
Oatman goes back to the
original script in which she
plays all the roles:
She premiered the new
version at the Belfry Theatre
in Victoria in' October to
universally rave reviews
from Victoria and Van-
couver cities. Peter Ladner
in the Vancouver Sun said:
"Patricia Oatman has
managed to...spark the same
jolt of electricity set off by
Griffiths-" Michael D_ Reid
in the 17ictoria Times -
Colonist praised: "She
assumes three roles . and,
works wonders with each,
resulting in a performance
that is nothing short of pure
tour -de -force."
Paul Thompson, artistic
director of Theatre Passe
Murallle and Co -creator of
Maggie and Pierre with Miss
Griffiths, had been on. the
lookout for an actress to take
over the gruelling triple role

from Miss Griffiths for many
,months when he spotted Miss
Oatman in another Toronto
production. She auditioned
for him, doing two and a half
hours of improvisation this
past summer before he
agreed she was -the actress
for the difficult role. Critical
and audience response in
Victoria, where the show had
a record run, proved he had
the right lady.
The new version of the
show (which is now entering
its third year of wowing
audiences from .coast to
