In fact, the only banner hanging in the gym is dated 1970. That's all beginning to change; there's no -banner yet, but the Junior Vikes have come a long way from last year's ninth place finish to first all season and second overall in Huron -Perth. And more im- portantly, they have earned a berth to WOSSA 'AA'. Volleyball has become a popular word around GDCI and has gained a respectable place withfootball and basketball. On Wednesday, the Junior Vikings travelled to Mitchell to the Huron -Perth playdowns, having ended the regular season tied with Listowel for first at 23 wins and seven losses. These playdowns are set up as a round robin competition where: each school plays each other one game, the top four continuing to the semi- finals. In the round robin competition, the Vikes couldn't have played better. Excellentcourt play by Chris Starkey and Kent Feagan and setting by Mike McCallum got the day off to a good start with a decisive 15-10 win over Clinton. The second match against Mitchell and the third against Stratford Northwestern showed Jim Keller's height and Terry Bean's aggressiveness which led the Juniors to 15-9 and 15-9 wins. The only loss suffered in round robin was to Madill at 15-11 which later on came back to haunt . them in the finals. The Vikes finished the round robin in first place after defeating Listowel 15-4 with four wins and one loss. The semi-finals pitted Goderich against Clinton and as in past experience Captain Shawn Dohery led the Vike$ to easy 15-9, 15-6 victories. Madill beat Stratford N.W. in the other series in three games and the finals were on the line - Goderich vs. Madill. The record between the two teams for the season was 2-2. Madill had beat Goderich in round robin. Roth teams were hot but Madill grabbed an early lead and the rest is history. The Vikings played their best game of the season but'so did Madill and the final result, even with the powerful spiking of ' Ken Linner, was Madill over Goderich 15-6, 15-4. Both teams advance to WOSSA `AA' in Woodstock on November 14 when the Vikes will compete against the winners of three other conferences, including Saunders and Oakridge from London. The Vikings and their coach Dave Cloet are wished the best of luck.
