last week. Friday in Lucan, the locals
outlasted Lucan 6-4. Playing at home
Saturday, the Goderich squad lost 3-2 to
Ilderton;

the third period. .
The game ended on an unusual note. as
Goderich goalie Terry Bean was ejected
for a last-minute fight with Lucan's
captain Hugh Dietrich. Goderich did not
have a second goalie dressed and finished
the last 44 seconds of the garne with
defenceman Jeff Sargent . acting as a
psuedoo-goaltender. Sargent made • two
good stops and the Goderich team was able
to kill off the clock with no damage oc-
curring.

The Vikings scored all their points in an
explosive second quarter. The first Viking
touchdown was scored by Shawn Rahbek
on a 92 -yard reverse, ,capping off a long
drive which began at the Vikings' 30 -yard
line.
On the ensuing kick off, Listowel
returned the ball to their own 35 -yard line,
but on the first play from scrimmage, Geof
Chase intercepted an errant Lords' pass
and returned it to the Listowel one -yard
line.
Ed Craig took the ball over for the&
second' Goderich touchdowt'i` : which was
converted by Joe Melady.
The next time the Vikings got the ball,
Craig scored again, running out of a crowd
of Listowel defenders on an off -tackle play
for a 70 -yard major.
The Vikings put together another long
drive late in the quarter. A 35 -yard pass
play from quarterback John Thompson to
Geof Chase put the ball on the Listowel
eight -yard line. With only seconds left in
the hall, the Vikings sent Craig on a fake
sweep action play which drew the entire
Listowel defence wide, leaving running
back Pete Stahl with a wide open path to
tilt goal line on the weak side. -That touch-.

defence took over.
The Vikings allewed theLord§ only three
first downs in the entire game. Their pass
defence took away any Listowel threat
through the air and the Vikings defensive
line ,and linebackers destroyed any hopes
the Lords had of running the ball.
' It was a total teain effort for the Vikings,
who'are coached by Bill Garrow and Bruce
Baker. The championship was the third in.
four years for the Goderich juniors and the
victory was the 39th in42 games over those
same four years, an almost incredible
'record. '
The Vikings were undefeated in 1981,
their third undefeated. season' in the last
four. 1, I8pand,.11lii0 vete also -undefeated

lost the championship by one point.
This season was supposed to be a
building year for the Vikings. The team
had 21 rookies in lineup, and 16 of the 29
junior Vikings will return next season.
Winning the Huron -Perth championship
this season was almost a bonus for coaches
Baker and Garrow, considering the large
number of first year players, but it's.
certain they will have a contender again
next season.
It's no wonder the cry around the Con-
ference is, "Break up the Vikings!"

The name of the game was defence
Saturday in Exeter when the Goderich
Vikings won the Huron -Perth Conference
senior football championship by defeating
the South Huron Panthers 7-1.
The Panthers were the defending Huron -
Perth champions and had been undefeated
this season until Saturday. Ron Bogart's
team had defeated the Vikings 21-16 in the
regular season in Goderich, thus finishing
first and gaining the home field advantage
for the final.
But if anyone thought the Vikings went
into Saturday's game as underdogs, they
forgot to tell the Goderich team about it.
The Vikings played like champions to win
their sixth title in the last seven years, last
year's Panther victory being the only
break in the string of championships for
coach Ray Donnelly's teams.
It was the Viking defence which Made
the difference in the game Saturday.
Except for a sustained drive following the
opening kickoff, the Panthers were unable
to move the ball. The Vikings spent all of
the first quarter and most of the second in
their own end of the field, but the defence
came up big every time.
As the game progressed, the hard-
hitting Vikings wore down the Panther,
attack. Dave McDonald, the Vikings' right
inside linebacker, was the leading force
for the Goderich defence. His punishing
tackles seemed to intimidate the Panther
running backs who, by the fourth quarter,
were running with considerably less
authority than in the early going.
South Huron held a 1-0 lead at the half on
the strength of a 32 -yard single kicked by
Greg Prout in the second quarter, but the
second half belonged to the Vikings. The
Panthers never got outside their own 45
yard line in the second half.
Offensively for the Vikings, the turning
points came in the third quarter. Despite
having the wind advantage, the Panthers
elected to run from their aunt formation on
a third and 10 situation. it was
McDonald, the defensive star, who made
the tackle which left the Panthers short of
the first down and gave tihe Vikings the
bail on the Exeter 35 yard line.
a field goal, but the snap was high. Rob
Plunkett, the would-be kicker, retrieved
the ball and ran for the first down,
This time, the Vikings were able to
sustain the drive and Jeff Feagan went
over for the game's only touchdown on a
four -yard sweep. Plunkett kicked the
convert.
The 1981 Vikings were not a pre -season
pick for the league title. Only five of 13
returnees had held starting positions last
year so Donnelly and his assistant coach
Chris Connor had their work cut out for
them.
Coach Donnelly has a motto on his office
this year's Vikings:, they got better.
Typical of th.eeffort shown
resulted in this improvement was quar-
terback David MacDonald. At the
beginning of the season his quarterbacking
skills .,were not impressive but through
hard work, both during and after practice,
MacDonald became a fine quarterback.
He probably threw more touchdown
passes than any other quarterback in
recent Viking history.
The Vikings atl worked hard in practice
and it was evident as the season
progressed that they were hnproving

yards to go, the Vikings decided to attempt stay the same." That motto well applies to the tough Viking defence. In addition to the
outstanding game by 'Finn' McDonald, the
whole Goderich defence was strong.
Defensive captain Mike Frayne, Carey
Muck, Paul Kalbfleisch, Mike Murphy,
Darryl Beattie, Tom Foran, Steve Frayne.
Ray Vanstone, John Sheardown, Greg
Lapaine, Chris Petre and Jeff Feagan all
contributed immensely to the Viking
victory by their spirited defensive efforts.
Murphy, Feagan, McDonald, and Kent
Scholtz all made pass interceptions and
Van stone recovered a fumble.
