Emergency responses . tested at BNPD KINCARDINE - There was a major release of radiation at the Bruce Nuclear Power Development (BNPD) on October 29th. The 'incident was simulated. A . practice session at BNPD gave police and municipal officers a chance to test their responses to an emergency situation, . if - it should ever happen. The eight-hour procedure began at 6 am with an imaginary loss -of -coolant accident. Local officials knew .there would be a practice, but didn't know the xactfime. Bruce Township Reeve John MacKenzie, chairman of the municipal control group, was contacted at 7:01 am. In the event of a real emergency situation, he would have to make crucial decisions to protect the local population. The OPP were notified, and other members of the control committee were asked to meet at the Bruce Township Community Centre. In the event of an, actual accident, the provincial control group would gather at OPP headquarters in Toronto. A team • of technicians would then be dispatched to the area to monitor radiation levels. If evacuation was required, other government services would be ready to go into action. For example, Bruce County social services id ,prepare ac- commodation at high schools a safe distance from BNPD.
